Blankets or duvet?

Bubblysqueak · 20/08/2019 21:19

I'm contemplating changing from a duvet to blankets and sheets as I get really hot at night but don't like sleeping without something covering me. I've recently started using a light fleece blanket when I'm really hot and am wondering whether blankets and sheets would be better. But I have a few questions-

Where do you buy them?

Are there specific/special sheets/blankets you need?

Is it a faff making the beds in the morning? (I am lazy)

How often will blankets/sheets need washing?

Thank you

Could you not buy a lighter weight duvet

dementedpixie · 20/08/2019 21:26

You can get duvets of 1 tog btw

Bubblysqueak · 20/08/2019 21:32

I was considering getting a lighter tog duvet, but dh feels the cold. I thought that with blankets I could kick the blanket off but keep the sheet covering me and I'd get the best of both worlds without disturbing dh.

Maybe a throw or something over our existing duvet could work.

DH gets hot at night and I get cold, so I've resorted to buying a massive 1 tog duvet and sewing a 7.5 single one on to my half. Works like a charm!

A duvet each? A partner duvet (has 2 different togs)

ThreeFish · 20/08/2019 21:46

Two 3/4 size duvets of different togs on a king size bed. Both in same covers and looks ok with cushions and a throw when bed is made.

Bubblysqueak · 20/08/2019 21:48

2 duvets could definitely work, thank you.

I use sheets and blankets. The blankets are either vintage from eBay or Vintage Fairs or... new from John Lewis. Well worth every penny. I like to be ‘tucked in’, DH likes to throw off the bedding. No regrets whatsoever.

I must admit I was tempted with blankets after being on holiday with sheets and blankets (however I wasn't making the beds!)

I hate blankets, as I wriggle too much.
We also have 2 duvets.
I share the kingsize with DH (4.5 currently, will go to 10.5 in the winter). He also has a 10.5 tog single - so in winter he can have 21togs Shock
Make bed with single down, then king over the whole lot.

You could use the duvet with sheets so you can kick it off the same way as you would with blankets?

pottedshrimps · 20/08/2019 23:43

I have a bedspread/comforter thing and blankets. I find duvets too warm and too light. I like being able to discard or add a blanket according to how I feel. I could never go back to using a duvet.

Bubblysqueak · 21/08/2019 07:36

After careful consideration and the realisation that I would need to iron the sheets for that nice crisp feeling I think I'll experiment with different tog duvets.

Wool duvets are brilliant. Despite DH bring really cold in bed, and me always being hot, we're both fine under a wool duvet.

orangeshoebox · 21/08/2019 07:42

we have separate duvets.
I'm always cold so have a 12 tog one and dh has a 4 tog one as he would get too hot and thrash around.
much easier to change and wash/dry as well.

wigglybeezer · 21/08/2019 07:44

DH and I have two single wool duvets, it's spoiled us for other beds. However we were just reminiscing about bed time at Grannies house, all tucked in firmly with sheets and blankets, made you feel safe, wouldn't work without someone to tuck us in though!
