I know this is silly but could you give me an idea what shoes boys wear at secondary and where is the best place to get them. We’ve always had the Velcro trainer style at primary and they’re not allowed at the new school.

my ds had ones similar to these. there is only limited sizing of them though, so if they don't have your ds's size try here x

Dogmatix34 · 20/08/2019 17:48

They are lovely, thank you very much sleep

In the school mine attend ( boys 16 and 12 in a comprehensive in pembrokeshire) they all wear all black converse/vans/gazelles etc.

Don’t do the converse / vans thing unless you’re very sure you can. We wouldn’t allow that at my secondary school.

FermatsTheorem · 20/08/2019 17:53

Go through the school uniform policy with a fine toothcomb before you buy, as mistakes will be expensive. (DS had a place at his second choice school which was really picky - shoes had to be black leather "professional type job" shoes; has since got a place at his first choice school which is "we don't care so long as they're completely black" - so it can vary enormously from one school to another).

Basically some schools are okay with trainer-type shoes so long as they're black, others are not, so you need to check which your DS is going to.

The school my son is at does trainers as well as long as they are all black. But no fabric shoes. This has made life so much easier over the years and less fighting from my son.

Dogmatix34 · 20/08/2019 19:51

Uniform policy states no trainer type shoes allowed.

i wouldn't go for the converse/vans then, they are classed as trainers at my dc's school x

MeMeMeYou · 20/08/2019 20:15

Sports direct had some nice kickers in them near me, boys styles. Boots and work shoe style.

LolaSmiles · 20/08/2019 20:18

Play it safe with nothing that could be viewed as a trainer (including vans/converse/leather trainer style/ shoes shoes that could pass as trainers from a distance but have been put in the 'back to school' section to increase pester power).

I'll be honest, we have no trainers and our boys have all managed to find shoes similar to work shoes. They still walk, ride their bikes, play football etc in them all the same.

No velcro style? FFS. Most 12 yr olds are unable or bad at tying laces.
There are slip-on styles would be my next choice.

FrangipaniBlue · 21/08/2019 18:39

DS chose these (which I was quite surprised at!)

There is no excuse for the average NT 12 year old to not be proficient in tying their shoelaces.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 21/08/2019 18:44

A 12 year old ought to able to tie their laces. Shoes depend on the uniforms.

Pipandmum · 21/08/2019 18:49

If they can’t tie their laces how do they do their trainers??
My son had black lace up shoes that looked all the world like what a man would wear to the office. This past year he wore slip ons.

lljkk · 21/08/2019 19:21

Lock Laces, like so. Although it can be dfficult to even find lace-up trainers in size 12-3 shoes.

I don't care whether PotteringAlong or any other MNer has deprecatory opinions of me or my DC. There is no point and precious little opportunity for 11yo DS to learn to tie laces yet.

And yet in every school I've ever worked in students have managed to find appropriate shoes (mix of laced up and slip on for boys and girls) and trainers. These are 11-16/11-18 schools.
