Another rejection after interview...

Job hunting is so depressing. Hardly anything about at the moment apart from very low wage jobs. Just received my third rejection in as many months. I know that's not many but it's hard to not take it personally. I get good feedback after interviews but seem to be rejected for very minor reasons (also suspect in 1 or 2 cases internal candidates were employed instead).

As my current job ends at the end of the month I can no longer say I'm employed and will become an unemployable pariah apparently (I didn't realise it was so bad to leave a job before another one, but circumstances meant I had to - not sacked or anything that was my fault).

Sigh. Just ranting really. Used to be so easy to get a job but not anymore. Anyone else in the same boat? Perhaps we can all support each other??

What type of job are you looking for?
Finding a suitable job/ candidate works both ways. Clearly your CV is good for getting the interviews, don't beat yourself up.

Maybe look at some interview techniques on YouTube, have some open questions ready. In the short time, you have to be likeable, professional and show you're capable.

Best of luck!!

Thanks Lamenouh. That's great advice but I've done all that sadly. I get good feedback so can't be too bad, i suppose. I think it's the lack of jobs above living wage that is depressing me. I'm looking for a senior admin or HR admin position.

Have you registered with any job agencies? Widen your search, would you consider temping?

Have you tried on Facebook? Your old school friends/ colleagues may know roles/ opportunities relating to your field? Sometimes you just have to be at the right place at the right time!!

Keep my fingers crossed for you. Sending you good luck vibes!! X

Have you tried LinkedIn? Loads of recruiters on there. I've had a bunch of rejections (or some outright radio silence) from a bunch of places that I thought, on paper, my CV was a great fit.

Recruiters have called via LinkedIn about roles in entirely different industries that I wouldn't have considered before but are really exciting and I'm now through to second interviews for them. Worth broadening your search (without resorting to indiscriminate scattergun approach I guess!)

Yes LinkedIn is good.
It's hard to find a good job with a decent salary - can only see jobs with one or the other!

Most jobs interview 2-4 applicants for each one vacancy, so most applicants are rejected.
It's not that personal, tbh (!)

Teddybear45 · 20/08/2019 20:44

Consider contracting type roles (Reed is good at these). A lot of companies like to contract senior admin before offering perm roles and it could be a great opportunity to increase your salary

RangerLady · 20/08/2019 20:52

Yes. I work in a quite specialised field with few jobs. Doing a contract now and it's finishing next month. Nothing part time coming up at all and what there is I interview for and get "overqualified". Next step would be management but I want part time so yeah I am overqualified but I wanted the job!

Likethebattle · 20/08/2019 23:07

I’ve just secured a new job, there were 181 applicants. Taylor your cv by job role and make it stand out. Be likeable, have a few funny short anecdotes that show you know what you are talking about.

Thanks so much for all your advice Thanks

It's tough. And admin jobs are some of the fastest shrinking jobs at the moment which means competition will be fierce.

Rejection doesn't mean you aren't good, just someone else was more suitable for that particular role.

Can you add any more specialist skills, like project management or finance to your skill set?

I posted a similar thread on here about six months ago. I had been rejected from about thirty jobs, most after final interview. It is so so soul destroying. It affected me quite badly, and I really struggled with the constant rejection.

Then finally I was offered a role. It’s almost exactly what I was after, amazing title, great salary, fantastic team, interesting job, a step up in seniority. I am so so happy. And I think all those rejections were worth it.

You’ll get there, and in the meantime use this as a learning experience. It is always good to be good at interviewing!

I get loads of interest from Indeed if I apply for jobs through them - proper jobs with national and multinational companies offering sensible salaries. Worth a look.
