5 year old clearing their throat... constantly

My son turned 5 this month. He keeps coughing and clearing his throat.

To the point it sounds bloody sore when he does it... like really from his boots. He says he can't help it. And that he can't cough.

Is it worth checking him with the doctor?

I would say its worth a GP trip, could be more like a nervous tick? but worth getting checked.

Does he ever complain of acid or reflux? If I miss too many days of omeprazole I get a cough.

If it’s worse at night then asthma.

Any cough over 3/4 weeks should be checked out.

Lactose intolerance? Dairy can be very mucus forming, and cause post nasal drip, leading to having to cough all the time.

Hello, just wondered if you ever got this sorted? My son is doing the same and it's driving us bonkers!

Allergies of asthma? My DD has both and when she starts the repetitive throat clearing it is a sign that she needs her inhaler. I thought it was a nervous tic for a while before making the connection.

It could be allergies. My son started this at around age 5, as well as eye rolling and nose twitching. He's 11 now and has been diagnosed with tourette's and adhd. So it is worth keeping an eye on.

In my experience this is an inner ear issue of congestion and build-up of ear wax - has your child shown any hearing problems at all?
