Talk to me about party food and party bags!

My son is having a whole class party. Am looking at ways to both keep costs down and reduce waste! Its the first big party we have hosted and he hasn't been to many as he's only just due to start reception. I'm doing pre made bags of food (popcorn, babybel, cocktail sausages and a kitkat) with fruit, veg sticks and sandwiches on the table.

I am not sure if we will eat cake at the party or send it home. What's the usual system? If they usually eat it at the party I may get rid of the chocolate bars from the food boxes.

So I know I don't want to do traditional party bags as they are just full of crap.

I was going to do a small bag of sweets and then a book each, but is that too much? All the same book? Different selections? Or is a decent sized bag of sweets with a nice thank you label enough? I guess if they are taking cake home a bag of sweets as well is a bit excessive?

Cake goes home

Buy some seeds and a few little pots (none plastic) kids love watching things grow

Cake goes home.
For party bags we did sweet cones and a slice of cake. Definitley no wase and we got the sweets from bookers. They cost me 70p each to make and we had half a tub of millions left.

I would say a party bag consisting of sweets plus a slice of birthday cake is sufficient and a thank you note attached is a nice gesture.

Fab! So sweetie cones and cakes sounds doable. Will have to find a booker near me.

I was a bit worried that in this era of healthy eating and sugar awareness, it might not be the done thing. I personally would be fine with my kids coming home with a sweetie cone and some cake, but I am very relaxed about these things!
