Are sore lips (on the face!) a symptom of peri menopause? Any

They’re so dry and chapped. They’re flaky and stinging. After I’ve eaten they get itchy and I’m starting to loose the definition in my lip line. I feel like I’ve tried every lip balm in boots.

I’m 38 but my hormones feel fucked, im wondering if it’s hormone related.

Any suggestions great fully received.

Don't know if it's hormonal or not, but I'd lose the cheap lip balm for a start. You're probably allergic to the fragrances and flavours in most of those. After a lot of trial and error I've found out that Vaseline in the blue pot is my best bet, and I can get away with the Body Shop hemp oil one and (just about) the Burts Bees honey one. But honestly, this is so individual, and as a rule, the fewer ingredients the better.

One other thing: I did read some time ago about a reaction some people can get, which occurs when certain kinds of fruit acids interact with UV light on the skin (lime juice being the worst, but lemon, orange, melon and tomato can also trigger it). If this is you, you might want to treat these foods with caution.

GPs can sometimes prescribe something to help if emollients don't do anything, or you can ask a pharmacist for advice. And obviously stay off the lippie for the foreseeable. Sad I sympathise. Sore lips are horrible.

Thankyou for the reply, I’ll go back to basics with Vaseline and see if that helps.

I had very dry and flaky lips when I had an iron deficiency, so it may be worth getting that checked.

Try vitamin B6 and avoiding artificial sweeteners.

I get them when I have iron deficiency too OP. I usually use bepanthen nappy cream. Everyone finds it weird, but it works for me!

Aqueo517 · 20/08/2019 09:07

Thankyou for all the suggestions. I’ll try the bepanthem too, I’m willing to try anything! I know my iron levels are ok as I had a blood test last month. It’s so weird though, I’m wondering if I’m allergic to something.

Lanolin nipple cream too!

I wonder if I’m allergic to toothpaste! It’s cropped up in a google search. I’ve just cleaned my teeth and my lips are burning. What on earth do I clean my teeth with instead though?!

I found that lip balms cause this. I don’t use anything now apart from lipstick and odd slick of Vaseline occasionally and at 48 and perimenopausl , I have no dryness.

Benjispruce · 20/08/2019 09:14

Anything will cause your lips to sting if they are chapped.

Lindormilk · 20/08/2019 09:14

Dehydration is a sign. Thats the 1st thing I notice is n myself.

Aqueo517 · 20/08/2019 09:19

Anything will cause your lips to sting if they are chapped very true. I’ll have a look in boots today though, see if they’ve got a natural toothpaste, it’s worth a try.

I don’t think I’m dehydrated, I drink lots of water.

It could be the toothpaste. Some of those whitening ones make my mouth sore and dry. I find Colgate gel doesn't cause it.
