We weren’t able to afford a holiday and this year has gotten away from us (we have two special needs children). We’re looking at a last minute trip to Northumberland. The kids love being outside and I’ve done a bit of research already but any must sees would be great though I’m a bit worried that it might rain. Also, anywhere that caters to coeliacs. Eldest of the three (he doesn’t have Sen) is a coeliac.

I'd also agree about beamish, but it's a bit of a drive. Go visit the Sycamore Gap (again it's not that close but amazing on a not raining day with a picnic)

Biancadelrioisback · 19/08/2019 19:40

I'd avoid Ashington. It has a reputation and from my experience, a well deserved one.

TheFatberg · 19/08/2019 19:42

Amble for a boat trip to see the puffins and ice cream at Spurelli.

Callingallbutterflies · 19/08/2019 19:45

Alnwick is great. Ashington... Not so much. Baliffgate Museum in Alnwick is really good and free to get in. Swimming pool is good too. Lots of restaurants and takeaways in and around Alnwick. Plus a good choice of supermarkets.

Venger · 19/08/2019 20:19

Plus, it's Alnwick. It's beautiful. My dream retirement plans include a small cottage in Alnwick.

TapasForTwo · 19/08/2019 20:22

Northumberlandlass Woodhorn is on my list Smile

Ashington is run down and grim. Morpeth is lovely and the complete antithesis of Ashington.

I find The Running Fox underwhelming, but I have only visited the one in Longframlington. Parking in Felton is as rare as hen's teeth. I drove through it earlier today and there wasn't any parking to be found.

Cragside is brilliant, but is £££££ unless you are an NT member.

Alwaysgrey · 19/08/2019 20:25

The other option was a cottage in Morpeth. I thought Alnwick might be a slightly better location.

These suggestions are fantastic. Thank you all so much.

Morpeth has more to offer than Alnwick IMO. It is a lovely market toen and has a good size Morrisons. I really like Morpeth.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/08/2019 20:30

Love northumberland so much.

Last time we stayed in warkworth with views to the castle from the front and overlooking the river at the back. Spent my evenings sitting by the river crocheting and watching egrets and herons😎

Lindisfarne, Dunstanburgh castle, Hadrians wall and Warkworth beach are my top choices.

Alnwick is lovely, Bamburgh is another fabulous beach and castle.

The weather is unreliable wherever you go in Uk but we got lucky and had an amazing time.

If I didn't live the other end of the UK, I'd visit all the time!

TapasForTwo · 19/08/2019 20:30

town not toen!

xyzandabc · 19/08/2019 20:33

We were near Amble last week. 1st time to Northumberland. I think everything we did has already been mentioned.

Kids 7, 10, 12. Cragside was our favourite.

Bamburgh castle and there is a gorgeous beach right next to it.
Walworth castle
Woodhorn mining museum
Newbiggin by the sea has a nice little maritime museum right next to the beach
Ice cream at spurellis in Amble.
The whole beach South of amble, druridge bay country park, miles and miles of sandy windswept beautiful beach. Though most beaches along the coast are like this I think.

stucknoue · 19/08/2019 20:34

Cragside is amazing, we went to the beach (the four legged one likes to swim), kielder Forest was beautiful and we loved vinlandia roman ruins. Newcastle has everything a big city usually has so ideal for rain

TapasForTwo · 19/08/2019 20:35

Doyouthinktheysaurus we stayed at The Sun one Easter. The banks round the castle were covered in daffodils. It was stunning.

A resort will have a bit of inside activities for the younger two at least, mine always loved the bingo (dd is autistic and numbers are her thing!)

TapasForTwo · 19/08/2019 20:37

Warkworth at Easter

Sorry about the double post. My picture didn't preview.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/08/2019 20:40

Oh wow, that's so beautiful TapasForTwo 😎😎

Horsemad · 19/08/2019 20:47

I'm staying in Warkworth next month! 🙂

MrsZlatan · 19/08/2019 21:02

Super helpful thread!

I'm booked to go camping in Belford next week Smile

Alwaysgrey · 19/08/2019 21:02

Seems there will be a few mumsnetters up there. It looks a truly beautiful place.

Location wise where would people pick between Alnwick and Morpeth?

Teateaandmoretea · 19/08/2019 21:14

I'd choose Cresswell Towers with DC over a cottage in Alnwick definitely. We had a great time there it was such good value and fab caravan.

Northumberland is lovely, yes it might rain but you aren't soluble. Can you tell I like British holidays Smile

Alwaysgrey · 19/08/2019 21:17

@Teateaandmoretea they don’t have any spaces. A lot of places aren’t accessible to stay as we want to bring our dog with us.

But we did like the look of it 🙂

All things being equal Alnwick is an amazing location. And it is handy for going a bit further north (Holy Island etc). Morpeth for me is too near Newcastle. But it would depend on the accommodation.
