Working in Hospital/NHS admin

Hello, I’m just looking for a bit of advice as I’m starting to apply for jobs around the Grade 2 payscale at our local NHS trust. I’ve had no official training in office work, but have spent the last 14 years working in my husband’s business doing all his admin, invoicing and banking etc. Is it going to be nigh on impossible for me to appear attractive enough to break into working in hospitals? I still plan to work for my husband, but in all honesty I need a new challenge, I currently only work 2 hours a day, but could easily do all the required work in one shift a week of about 5 hours, so wish to do something else now my children are older and don’t need me as much!
There seems to be so much variety and chance of improving my skills and learning - and I wish to do something for myself for once!
So any advice would be greatly received!

At band 2 you wouldn't be given anything remotely challenging to do.
I took early retirement from a managerial job and go a Band 2 office job at the hospital. It was great from the point of view of having no staff or responsibility but was mind numbingly boring and I was never allowed to use any initiative.

Thanks, I’m looking at it as a stepping stone really, get a understanding and grounding in what’s required. I have no administrative qualifications so have no chance at anything of a higher wage bracket - so to get my foot in the door is my main objective.

You won't need any admin qualifications for band 2. Just apply for it and as long as you get through to the interview you'll then be able to explain all the experience you have from your husbands business 😊

I’m working Band 2 NHS hospital admin, also after doing my husbands admin.

Originally I applied for several nhs jobs without getting an interview, then spent a few hours a week volunteering in a healthcare related office to get more relevant experience, and only after that got an interview/the job..

I’m quite old though, and had been out of an office for many years.

I love it.

I think you'll stand a great chance of getting a band 2 (or 3) role. Assuming you are applying via NHS Jobs, make sure that you match your experience very closely to the person spec when you're completing the personal statement section (and anywhere else you can too!). One of the first things the recruiters will do is check the candidates' applications against the person spec when deciding who to shortlist. Good luck.

That’s great, thank you everyone. I’ll make sure that my extra info is linked as much as possible to the job spec.
