Story here

Is this the first sensible thing he has done?

I don't wish to start a fight BTW

Who has called anyone names C130 I said it was irresponsible and dangerous not to vaccinate....which is factually correct.

C130 · 07/01/2020 19:16

I never said you called anybody anything CosmoK. A different poster did.

CosmoK · 07/01/2020 19:18

People get angry about this topic so name calling does happen. It's frustrating to see and hear of other people willfully putting others at risk because of lies and propaganda.
I wish they'd make vaccinations mandatory unless medically exempt

Thelnebriati · 07/01/2020 19:23

''Britain has lost its “measles-free” status with the World Health Organisation three years after the virus was eliminated. During the first quarter of 2019, there were 231 cases of measles in the UK.''

I'm in favour of counteracting fake news, but I'm also suspicious about this being a trojan horse.

C130 · 07/01/2020 19:25

Until then parents have a choice.

Hoik · 07/01/2020 19:26

Why would you think it's a Trojan horse? The WHO announced in August last year that the UK had lost its measles free status and urged the government to act upon it, this is not fresh news.

Insaneinthemembury · 07/01/2020 19:28

2 of my friends are doctors, one in a and e and theyve started to see more measles cases.
The complications that can arise are horrific, permanent brain damage and death.
I'm glad boris is making this health crisis an emergency
My parents didnt get my vaccinated even tho I had asthma and to this day I haven't forgiven them
(They didnt do any research either, they just dont trust the government. They are silver foil hat wearing types)

CosmoK · 07/01/2020 19:28

C130 unfortunately

Drabarni · 07/01/2020 19:30

I too think he's got more important things he should be doing/ discussing with us.
A pretty good subject to sidetrack us though.

C130 · 07/01/2020 19:35

Drabarni I agree.

Skittlesandbeer · 07/01/2020 19:36

I can tell you that committed vocal anti-vaxxers (nearly) all quietly comply as soon as they realise their stance disqualifies them from childcare and education and some welfare payments.

They (mainly) didn’t even fight back in Australia when policies requiring full immunisation came in. I’ve always assumed they were too embarrassed to admit that their principles folded when they realised they’d have to homeschool and/or stop relying on state handouts. All a bit too inconvenient?

In my state immunisation of under 5’s is steady at 95.4%, above the level required for herd immunity. No education campaign is going to achieve that. Ever.

Syncplug · 07/01/2020 19:40

Good. It's selfish not to vaccinate other than for medical reasons, the fact that we have lost our measles free status is terrifying. I would say that children shouldn't be able to access the school system if they haven't been immunised by choice, but it's unfair children suffer for parents selfishness. Although it's also unfair for a vulnerable person to catch a perfectly preventable disease.

mumwon · 07/01/2020 19:52

many/most/some anti vaxxers don't believe in any vaccination - including things like tetanus, meningitis or the medicine for polio - they have spread this fear across the world to developing countries - So not only will we have resurgence of measles damaged dc from rubella but dc dying from tetanus & polio too (amongst other diseases that are dc if not totally free from have a handful who might develop minor infections instead)

yellowsun · 07/01/2020 19:55

So is the strategy just to announce that we need to vaccinate to news and social media then put pressure on an already financially stretched NHS to fund ‘catch up’ drives? Surely making vaccinations compulsory would be more effective?

x2boys · 07/01/2020 19:56

Ah the irony ,usually on here if someone starts a thread about anti vaxxers people are up.in arms about it but because mumsnet hate Boris Johnson it's the parents choice Hmm

YourOpinionIsNoted · 07/01/2020 19:59

I don't hate Boris Johnson. I do think he's a bit of a twat. I also think he's right to be pushing for higher vaccination rates, though in my opinion compulsory vaccination is the way to go.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/01/2020 19:59

Good, it’s about time.

My dh has low immunity, I dread him coming into contact with an infected child. It would take him months to recover Sad

Drabarni · 07/01/2020 20:05

I agree with Pinkyyy

All ours were vaccinated, but I have many family members who haven't.
I believe it's a parents choice, but do also agree in an informed decision through education.
