University costs

My dd starts university in September and we’re trying to work out how much money we will need to give her to live on. Her loan doesn’t cover accommodation fees so we will have to add approx £1500 a year towards that ourselves. How much will we need to give her for weekly expenses, food, toiletries, stationary, going out but luckily she’s not a drinker (not yet anyway!) etc. Hoping somebody that has gone through this recently can help please. Her course will be full time so cannot see that she will have time to get a job. It’s all feeling rather daunting!

We are topping up to the maximum loan - so for this year outside of London that is £8750 I think (at least that's what I agreed to) in addition I've bought her starter kit (pots, cutlery etc), will do a first food shop with lots of long life items, toiletries etc then if she's short she needs to work more - she has a part time job of sorts because she's sponsored already

I’m struggling to know how much to give my DS, he got the minimum maintenance loan so we have to top up accommodation, I was thinking 300 a month. Someone mentioned a long running thread on Mnet but I can’t seem to find it, could anyone point me in the right direction?

sit down and work it out, how much for food, travel, entertainment.
plus how much you can afford

Didn’t know overseas post grads get priority. Seems unfair as all still have to find accommodation and possibly travel long distance to find it. Thank you for the heads up on dentists etc. Think we are going to in this long term as she has her eyes set in a masters and phd so she will have to find work or internships during holiday periods.
Appreciate everyone’s advice!

The minimum is to top up the maintenance loan to the maximum (is that about 9.5K- not sure) - so it depends how much loan she can get.

But depending on where she is going probably more.

DD hoping for catered halls, hopefully maintenance loan will cover that. We're thinking £225pm to cover, £120 which is approx what we have each for clothes, going out independently, personal luxuries. The other £100 towards lunch and travel home. She'll have to get a job as this won't cover all the travel home, as she's 360 miles away.

We are in the same position but second year. She will pay her rent with her loan and overdraft, save £1000 and we will pay her £250 a month then next summer she pays off overdraft rinse and repeat.
