I’m thinking of a career change. Is the training ‘on the job’ or college based? What assessments are involved? How long did the training take?

Many thanks.

I used to be a maternity HCA. We did a 3 week "training" period then we started work. I think DH when he was a HCA did a couple of days of mandatory training (induction, manual handling, infection control etc) then started work.

It's an on the job sort of training, not a college one.

You don't necessarily need any prior experience or relevant training to apply to be an HCA- if you're successful at interview then you'll be taught the basics as part of your induction (moving/handling, infection control etc) and likely do a couple of shadow shifts to learn the ropes. If it's a band 3 or more specialised role then some of the application criteria will be different, but it will be on the job specification if so.
