Hypnotherapy - any good? Or total nonsense?

Here's the thing, I'm the world's worst procrastinator. I frustrate myself with it.

I never miss a deadline but instead of using the sufficient time I have, majority of the time, I leave things to the last minute resulting in huge stress and long hours (particularly where work is involved).

I've got an appointment booked for hypnotherapy and the clinic have told me they have high success rates. It's £150 a session though, and they think I'll need approx 3 sessions. Now this will be money well spent for me if successful, especially in a work capacity, but naturally I'm concerned that it's maybe a load of tosh.

So, any success stories of hypnotherapy? Doesn't need to be for the same thing but have any of you felt it really turned a situation/habit/phobia around for you?

Cheers, all Smile

I tried it a couple of times and it had limited impact. I'm currently trying to use natal hypnotherapy to prepare for birth, but finding that having watched 'Get Out' is massively undermining my confidence in it 😂.

Thanks for replying none.
Do you think your fear factor is overriding the success? Or do you just think it's bollox? Lol

That seems very expensive OP. I've had hypnotherapy before (via a staff offer at an NHS trust) and it was £30 a session. This included CDs that I could listen to afterwards, and was encouraged to listen daily.

My experience was that if I keep listening to the CDs daily - not easy as they are an hour long - then the hypnotherapy works, but that I need to keep doing this and commit the time or all that hard work is undone.

Clucky, I'm overseas and everything is private healthcare. This isn't something that's covered on my insurance. I agree, the amount is a bit eye watering but I can afford it... if it works!
I'm not sure if there will be a cd option available but I'll know to ask now so thanks for replying

Hmm - so I first had it to help with weight loss (before watching Get Out) and I think it just didn't 'stick' - it had an impact for a couple of weeks and then very deeply ingrained eating habits started to rear their heads again. Perhaps if there had been CDs or follow up it could have helped...?

Currently, I'm finding that I'm gently drifting off into my natal hypnotherapy CD and that horrible "sink into the floor" jumps into my mind in that nasty sinister voice of hers. Shudder. It just harshes my mellow and gets me tense, which is the enemy of hypnosis!

I had hypnotherapy to overcome arachnophobia-it definitely had an effect. I'm not saying I want a tarantula as a pet but I'm nowhere near as bad as I used to be

SadieContrary · 18/08/2019 19:41

None & MyGhast, thanks for both taking the time to reply.
I'm bad enough to say that I'm actually a bit desperate now. Sounds pathetic - wish I could just get a massive kick up the arse!
I'm going to just go for it. Nothing to lose (except a small fortune Hmm) and will post back after appt on Tues if anyone interested in update

It definitely has a good evidence base. It's used by doctors, dentists etc here and approved by the official bodies etc. I did hypnobirthing and found it really effective. I think I depends if you are susceptible to it. If you go in a bit cynical it probably won't work so well. You have to have faith in it. I also had it for anxiety and it worked in the short time but not long term. I have seen it used really successfully for needle phobias.

FiveLittlePigs · 18/08/2019 20:43

I had hypnotherapy to get over my fear of water. Think there was some miscommunication along the way as I'm now not so scared of heights. Grin

SadieContrary · 19/08/2019 09:22

Avocado & FiveLittlePigs - thanks for replying and for the info.
I'm defo not sceptical - I want it to work more than anything. I suppose I asked here because if I'd had overwhelming responses that it was rubbish then I'd have been very reluctant to part with such moneys.
Fingers crossed for tomorrow

Have you looked on YouTube as there are loads of hypnotherapy videos?

Read the reviews and try some out to see if they help.

I had hypnofertility sessions as well as acupuncture - who knows if it worked or not but I definitely felt so much calmer and in control and DD has just turned 6

I had some hypnotherapy to help me cope during a very stressful period in my life. I did find the sessions helpful, and I gained skills that I could implement afterwards. It wasn't a radical change though.

I hope your appointment goes well!

romany4 · 19/08/2019 18:39

I had hypnotherapy for anxiety as it was causing me problems with eating and swallowing food. It worked for me. She was really good.
I went for a session once a week for 8 weeks. £45 a session.
