Hi,
I had a medical abortion at about 2pm.. didn’t start bleeding until 8ish but have been bleeding extremely heavily and saturating sanitary towels/clothes pretty constantly.

Have tried calling Marie stopes but there’s no answer from there 24hour line.

Do I need to go to a&e?

I would ring 111 and see what they say.
Hope you're ok and it calms down soon ❤️

Elieza · 17/08/2019 23:54

That can happen, my friend woke up next morning and her bedding was ruined. Put down lots of bed pads or wadding or old duvet or blanket you no longer want just in case.

But 111 are best to advise and can take any health issues into account.

I hope you feel better soon and can get back to your usual self. Flowers

I had a termination a couple of months ago and this happened to me. It absolutely gushed out (sorry) like nothing I have ever experienced before. It was all over my back and stomach (sorry!!)

I was warned that this would happen so it wasnt overly frightening (I was 8 weeks and took the tablets, so there was a lot of clots too)
It slowed down dramatically the next day.

I dont know whether our processes are the same but I'd say it's normal. Did the clinic warn you this may happen? If you're worried ring the helpline or NHS helpline and ask for advice.

Hope all is well. Flowers

Just reread your OP, we had the same procedure (2 tablets for the medical termination)

This is what I had and the exact same happened to me. I would try not to worry. It is scary and traumatic but I would say it's normal from what I have experienced and researched.

You can always reevaluate tomorrow.

Venger · 18/08/2019 00:35

I've had miscarriages medically managed and a termination. In all cases I was told that if I was soaking two or more pads in an hour then I should call the ward but if the ward was closed (day unit) I should go to A&E.

If you don't want to go trailing up to A&E then call 111 but be aware they will probably send you there anyway. Regardless, you need medical advice for bleeding that heavy.

FromChaosToHarmony · 18/08/2019 00:40

Venger, that's interesting, I wasnt told anything like that. I dont know whether I was just unlucky with the clinic because I actually called the clinic back a few weeks later for advice (my first period after the termination was awful) and they never got back to me.

Please ignore my advice to just leave it then! I genuinely thought it was normal to bleed excessively and to experience a fair amount of pain.

Blahblahblahnanana · 18/08/2019 00:40

You need to go to a&e.

PurpleDaisies · 18/08/2019 00:42

You need to seek proper real life medical advice right now from a source such as 111 or directly from a and e (which is probably where they’ll send you anyway). Flowers

Please don’t give medical advice if you’re not qualified to give it. This is really dangerous. Op you need advice from a better source than mumsnet.

FromChaosToHarmony · 18/08/2019 00:48

What do you think happens after a termination though?

Every single source I have read says it is completely normal to bleed heavily afterwards, that is the nature of the procedure.

As you can read from my follow up posts I advised OP to ignore me and i also suggested calling the NHS helpline/clinic.

I was told by the medical professionals to expect blood and "labour like" pain. Any other signs of infection then of course straight to A&E but bleeding is completely normal. The clots, embryo etc have to leave the body, it is essentially a heavy period.

PurpleDaisies · 18/08/2019 00:56

You couldn’t have read very thoroughly. Most will also say that if you’re soaking through more that two pads in an hour you should seek urgent medical attention or call an ambulance.

op this might be helpful. Scroll down to the bit on bleeding.

Yes call 111/go to A+E.

I expect it's the very last thing you want to be doing now but I really think you should.

Can you get to A+E BTW? Is someone with you?

EverTheConundrum · 18/08/2019 01:26

I had to wear nappies for 6 weeks after it was that bad. Perfectly normal. If still soaking through more than a pad per hour by morning - A&E ASAP

PurpleDaisies · 18/08/2019 01:32

EverTheConundrum waiting until morning is against medical advice. Based on what the op has said, she needs to talk to someone now.

CalliopeCat · 18/08/2019 01:38

My friend nearly died after an abortion through an infection and heavy bleeding. She wanted to go to bed bed her mum took her to A&E where she collapsed and was rushed straight into resus.

You wouldn't leave it if you were bleeding that heavily from anywhere else and you need to been seen. I'd swerve 111 and go straight to A&E because they're going to send you there anyway.

Hope you're okay x

springydaff · 18/08/2019 02:03

But 111 may want op to be taken to A+E in an ambulance so it's beneficial to call them first. Or 999.

When I bled very heavily in a similar situation my GP called an ambulance immediately.

ReallyHeavy1 · 18/08/2019 08:16

Thank you all so much for your messages, I was 8+5 so I think that has definitely contributed.

Managed to soak a pad in 15mins and bleed
Onto my partners sofa 😩

Finally got through to Marie stopes and they were happy for me to stay at home so I ended up falling asleep on the toilet (!!!!) and have definitely passed the worst of it now I think.

Went to bed at about 2.30 and haven’t filled a night pad.

Thank you all again for all your messages x
