New puppy

We’ve had our 9.5 week old puppy since he was 8 weeks. We seemed to be getting somewhere with toilet training and for a few days he was going outside mostly. Now he will mostly poo outside but will save almost all wees for inside. O take him out so often (every half hour if he’s not asleep) but no matter how long we’re Out there he almost always waiting until we’re back in to wee. It feels like he’s waiting to get back in to go. I’m doing what I think is right- take him out regularly, have a word I say to encourage him to go, get really excited when he goes outside and give him a small treat. Does anyone have any other advice or is it just a case if he’s very young and I just have to carry on until it clicks?

Ours is 11 weeks on Monday and it was going well then suddenly took a nosedive. Doing the same as you. If I catch him weeing indoors I put him straight outside and firmly say the word.
It is getting mighty frustrating. I don't remember many moons ago when I had two pups at once, same breed as this one, it being this hard. Confused

Mine has only really cracked it in the last month. He’s 6 months old.

I’d say he’s been totally reliable in the last month only.

It’s gonna be a while yet

Thanks Lady

Boxer - maybe I just need to be more patient. Thank you

I was starting to get stressed at around the 16 week mark, and in the month that followed it got so much easier. Just reminded myself he was still so young and thankful for wood flooring/tiles in the kitchen diner!

I took mine out every 15 minutes til a successful outside wee. Every time they started sniffing and circling. Before he goes in his bed, straight after food and then back to every 15 mins. As soon as they wake up and if they get silly and giddy. Sometimes the play biting and silliness can indicate a need to go out. Have you tried the bells you hang by the door ? I used my dog's paw to ring them every time we opened the door, he soon learnt to ring them to ask to go out.

It is incredibly intense for a couple of days but I think our guy had 2 accidents ever following the schedule.

Good luck!

Every time I took mine out and be went for a wee I said .... going for a wee. Continuously over and over. Every single time. He learnt then when I said to him going for a wee inside he had to go out and wee. He did really well. Also meant I could get him to go to the loo on command if needed.

OP you know you HAVE to post a photo - it's a the law.

Cherrysoup · 17/08/2019 21:39

Restrict him to one room. Huge praise when he goes and teach him a key word. Mine still fly out the door if I tell them wees and poos, they're so funny!

Whywhywhy1 · 18/08/2019 23:08

Thank you for the advice.
I have started given a treat to entice/reward whypup to go to the toilet. I still accompany it with the phrase ‘go quick’ but he seems to respond more to this. I only give him a 3rd if a very small treat (4 calories per whole treat) each time he goes for a wee or poo. As I’ve never had a puppy before, I’m not sure if I’m doing the right thing or not but it seems to be working a bit better. Can anyone advise? Tia

I don't use a treat as they can get too focused on that, just reward with praise after they go. Never get impatient, and use the same spot every time.

SamBeckett · 19/08/2019 01:18

I dont think giving him a treat is a good idea he will associate the treat with a wee , so when you want to teach him to do something else ( sit / wait etc ) and you give him a treat he may think you want him to wee. young pups get confused easily

RubbingHimSweetly · 19/08/2019 02:45

I've used treats with friends' dogs for house training. Reward when he goes, sometimes a clicker can help mark the act you are rewarding. Lots of praise still. When he gets fairly consistent start only treating every other wee and wean him down, always with lots of praise though.
