Does anyone have any experience with a waterproof cover for a cast? Any that are particularly good? Thanks in advance!

A friend had a Limbo cover for a leg injury which was excellent.

I should specify I mean for swimming as we’re going on holiday. Thanks again.

You can't go swimming with any of them as its too much pressure on the affected limb. The limbo will let you paddle around happily, get splashed etc, but you shouldn't submerse

You can't swim with a cast. Covered or not.

NoTeaForMe · 17/08/2019 16:21

She’s 6 so it’s more being in the water than professional swimming. I thought that the cast covers were good? Are they not? It’s just going to be too awful to go and her not be able to swim!

Limbo covers are good but they're not for proper swimming, just showering. I did try using them properly underwater once as a child and it was fine but it's definitely not reliable and a wet cast is a pain to sort out

fergusthefrog · 17/08/2019 16:38

Is she okay to fly if you're flying? You might need a doctors letter due to the cast. (Obviously I know you may not be but just in case!)

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 17/08/2019 17:02

Dd went swimming in the sea yesterday with exH with a wrist splint on as she's broken her wrist. This is despite being told no activities like this by the hospital . And bike riding today. Just one of the many reasons he's an ex!

Paddle is ok but definitely not actively swimming.

I got one from here. It was brilliant for use in the bath and shower.

mama1980 · 17/08/2019 17:20

They are ok for showering and the odd splash but not for much in the water time tbh.
I learnt from experience let my eldest go in the shallow end and paddle etc with a cover on..... a wet cast is a real nuisance to sort out.

fortheloveofPete · 17/08/2019 17:32

As pointed out a wet cast is a pain to sort out BUT I would also check your insurance if you're going abroad and insist on risking it getting wet. I doubt you'd be covered.

Not to mention delaying the recovery of the broken arm.

We got a Bloccs waterproof cast cover from Amazon when my DD fractured her wrist last month. It was absolutely fantastic and probably the best £18.99 I've ever spent. She wore it every day to swim in the large round pool we have in the garden (so not swimming lengths or anything but totally submerged for periods of time). She also wore it in the bath and shower. Wrist (fractured in 2 places) healed well and on schedule and the consultant has recommended more swimming to strengthen it over the next few weeks.

OctoberLovers · 17/08/2019 17:38

Can she fly? Full cast can swell

onedayallthiswillbeyours · 17/08/2019 17:40

Just to add it was actually the hospital that recommended the Bloccs cover to us when we asked if there was anything she could use to go swimming. She had a short cast that finished just below the elbow and it didn't get wet at all in our experience.

NoTeaForMe · 17/08/2019 21:19

Thank I’ll for the replies. The doctors have given her the all clear to fly but we have one more appointment before our holiday so nothing is 100% sure at the moment. It’s an “old” cast now and according to google most airlines are only worried about ones that are 24-48 hours old anyway. I have ordered a Bloccs cover. They advertise as being good for swimming whereas Limbo do say no to swimming. Also you can occasionally get Bloccs on prescription so my thinking is they must be good....?
