Swimwear in France

Are rules generally enforced? Have only been to beach before, planning on swimming in public pool. I understand that men need to be wearing stretchy trunks - does this apply to children too? I usually swim in short board shorts over swimsuit. Assume these wouldn't be allowed either.

yes rules are mostly enforced need to be proper swim wear not shorts etc that you could wear outside
also most pools insist you wash sunscreen off being using the pool so no "oil" slick
not sure about kids but board shorts balloon in water so generally not allowed

WeshMaGueule · 17/08/2019 15:52

Yep they're strict, budgie smugglers and hats for one and all. You can usually buy a pair from a vending machine at the pool if you forget.

envacances · 17/08/2019 16:03

Didn't think of hats! Need a quick shopping trip. Thanks. Annoying I can't wear my swim shorts. They don't balloon and are really practical for playing, slides etc. Oh well. Are rash vests allowed?

Not sure, never seen them being used. Not enough sun at our local indoor pool to need one!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/08/2019 16:14

Men need to wear budgie-smuggler (ugh) type swimmies or tight-fitting short-shorts type. Presumably adolescent boys/teens too. Not sure about younger boys.

Dh had to buy some in France when taking kids - they had them on sale - and it wasn't even a pool as such - it was a natural lake.

I re8taking my sins to the swimming pool in Chamonix and Ds1 who would have been about 13 at the time being ' outraged' at the thought if wearing Speedos. I told him he didnt have to and we would see him back at the apartment after our swim. He soon relented and ' let's me buy him a pair!!
Once in the water he realised it was the same rule for everyone.

notacooldad · 17/08/2019 16:20

Fluppin' heck
' I remember taking my sons'
There's other mistakes in the post but I'm sure you will get my point!! Sorry.

Owlsintowels · 17/08/2019 16:31

We were in France this summer and surprised by this rule. It was enforced at the flume we went to, DH had to pay €15 for some budgie smugglers at the pool entrance

i quite like them

Thewheelsarefallingoff · 17/08/2019 16:33

Really strict IME, even for children.

WooMaWang · 17/08/2019 16:35

DS2 wore his jammers (the cycling short style swim shorts) and a rash vest. My BF wore jammers too. He’s decided he’s going to wear jammers for all swimming from now on as they’re more comfortable anyway. Much better than budgie smugglers too. I wore (very) tight fitting shorts with my bikini top and had no issues.

Branleuse · 17/08/2019 16:36

Yes, its similar in public pools in germany and italy too. Not sure about rest of europe

WooMaWang · 17/08/2019 16:37

I don’t imagine they’d object to knee length jammers anywhere. They don’t look like outerwear (unless you’re a MAMIL) and it’s what most of the competitive swimmers wear anyway. If they wear them to race in the Olympics, they’re going to be fine for a French swimming pool.

Glittertwins · 17/08/2019 17:02

Yes, strongly enforced where we were. Knee length jammers are perfectly ok, as are the ones that look like short shirts - they just have to be swimwear, not out clothes wear.
Decathlon's own brand range is ok - nabaiji.

Branleuse · 17/08/2019 17:03

Its easier to just get speedos.
Women manage to wear form fitting skimpy swimwear without freaking out. Not sure so many men are weird about it

Glittertwins · 17/08/2019 17:03

Short shorts, not shirts!!!

envacances · 18/08/2019 13:24

Just got back from Decathlon and DS1 had tried his shorts on. He is not impressed!

Job done!

(Decathlon is like IKEA, so many things I didn't know we needed!!)
