For dd bday age 12.

She has never skated however is ok ish ice skater. Dh said because of this single blade?
I think double and normal skates as easier I don't know however never skated.

Is skate hut good... About 35 on there and with skates do you buy size above? She is,4, 5

Normal skates are harder than blades. They go out from under you easier. Riedells are good starter skates. Don't get them too big. She'll break her neck. Different wheels depending on skaters weight and what she's skating on.

Is there a reason she wants skates and not blades?

Gobbolinocat · 16/08/2019 22:14

It's a surprise bday gift.
She did ice skating lessons last year and did OK.
Wanted roller things on her shoes and they were rubish so I was thinking for her bday soon, get some lovely roller skates.

Interesting that you think single are safer. I would prefer saferGrin

My only advice is to ensure that you buy the elbow, wrist and knee guards to go with them if you don't already have them...

EmmapausalBitch · 17/08/2019 09:24

Yes to Skate Hut. For her first skates, I'd go for something cheaper than Riedell. I wouldn't worry about brand - she will grow out of them, and you can always get her better skates in the future if she really likes it.

If she's ice skated, she'd probably find blades easier. I find quads (wheels in each corner) easier because that's what I grew up on. Go for a boot that supports the ankle, rather than a trainer type thing.

One difference between ice skates and roller blades is that the stopping technique is different (stoppers on the front of ice skates, the back of blades). YouTube has lots of videos to show you techniques.

Skating is a wonderful sport - I'm glad your daughter enjoys it Smile

I've used quads and blades. I grew up skating on quads, and for playing roller derby. I did a few skating marathons on blades/inlines - you can go faster on them but I had a lot less control (because I'm not as used to them). I now do artistic skating (jumps, spins, dance to music) on quads, and I coach beginner skaters. I always recommend Skate Hut to parents for their kids' first skates.

Why not take your daughter to a roller disco? She could try quads and blades, and see which she likes the best.

Ok, I'll stop now Grin

SpoooyGhost · 17/08/2019 09:37

Sorry, I recommended Riedells as I'd assumed there was a reason for quads - jnr derby or roller disco.

Gobbolinocat · 17/08/2019 10:42

That's really helpful Emma.

So you think quads might actually be OK then.

I think quads will be fine Smile

Fraggling · 17/08/2019 10:54

We've used skate hut a few times they're great. They will advise as well if you msg them.

DDs have had the sort of 70s / 80s style disco ones and picked it up quickly

Fraggling · 17/08/2019 10:55

I always go a size up as they are expensive and my kids feet grow quick!

Gobbolinocat · 20/08/2019 08:13

One more question if anyone still reading my dd foot with is between d, e and sometimes f. Will she find skates OK?

Skate Hut are great. Call them and they'll be happy to discuss options.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 20/08/2019 08:25

Both my girls started off with these skates and were perfect for them www.skatepro.uk/301-7519.htm. You can get them without light up wheels and are probably a bit cheaper (we go to roller discos so they are quite fun).

They are particularly good as they have adjustable sizing so will last a few years. My dds tend to wear a pair of thick/welly socks over their normal socks so that might help if your dd has narrow feet.

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 20/08/2019 08:26

SFR are a decent mid price brand. Don’t be tempted to go for super cheap ones.
