WWYD re: car?

We have a five year old car we bought two years ago. Had nothing but silly niggles with it.

We currently have a problem, have taken it into garage. Garage advised it would be £400 for one part, but could end up being an extra £600 for an attachment. Ordered £400 part recommended by manufacturer, it doesn't fit. They had a similar model in a few weeks ago with same problem, garage googled to find there's lots of ongoing issues and requests for a recall. Problem is highly likely to damage engine, which could cost £3000, guess car presently worth £4,500.

Present garage will work on it, but think it's better to go to Nissan garage, so we don't invalidate any protential recall, but it's 15 miles away. It sounds awful and very sluggish, don't know if it'll make the journey and garage don't seem happy for us to take it as offered couresty car for a few more days. We have break down cover, but don't know if we'd be covered if it broke down enroute. Also, DH is very honest so couldn't lie if it broke down.

WWYD? Just getting our money back together after a bad seven years, so have something in the bank to get an older car than present one. Can't sell it to a private person. Would a garage take it in part exchange, which is what we've done in the past?

If there was a recall the manufacturer would have contacted you - I have a second hand car and they contacted me.

Do you want to get the car fixed?
Is the car driveable? They will check this if you part ex.

You can search online to find out if it’s subject to a recall and as above they do write to owners.

I would try and drive to the dealership if that’s your preferred garage. And part exchange or well to a ‘we buy any car’ type organisation accepting you will not get a great price.

Honestly? I would see if the car qualifies for the scrappage scheme and use the trade-in value towards a new car if you can afford it.

I don't think it's worth spending more money on the car, I think you need to cut your losses sadly.

There hasn't been a recall, but there's plenty of support for one online.

Ideally, we'd get the car fixed but just don't know if it'll make the journey - sounds awful, cuts out, has two warning lights. Our garage thought they'd helped with oiling/cleaning, went to collect and just moving it around forecourt problem started again - they're not going to make any money out of us now but have let us have a courtesy car a bit longer so are being brilliant.

DH emailed Nissan garage last night, has tried to phone twice today between clients, no response.

We know we won't get a great price now.

Another Emma thanks for the link, unfortunately it's not eligible, but you can continue with trade in. Really need to buy local, as we'd both want to try out.

Can you tow it to 100m down the road from the dealer then drive it the rest of the way? I suspect Nissan will give you more for it than anyone else (assuming it is a Nissan!) especially if you buy another Nissan.

AnotherEmma · 16/08/2019 19:24

But if this one is so shit why would you buy another one?!

Sunshinegirl82 · 16/08/2019 19:28

Depends on the issue. If it's confined to a particular model of car produced at a particular time chances are everything would be fine with a different model. I'm not aware that all Nissans are inherently bad, I'd imagine every make has its recall issues somewhere along the line.

ifonly4 · 16/08/2019 19:29

AnotherEmma, sorry maybe I'm not being clear, I mean another make of car!.

Sunshinegirl82 to be honest we won't risk buying another Nissan. I know it's probably just the model, but worst car either of us have ever come across.

Yeah I was responding to sunshine

FWIW I had a Hyundai as a courtesy car. Best car I've ever driven.
