What's your experience of McDonalds as an employer?

DS is having a year off and has been working at McDonalds for spending money.

I have to say, I've been very impressed with the way they deal with staff.

-They don't do zero hours contracts - although the hours do vary a bit he's guaranteed 30 pw (which is what he asked for).

-Staff seem to be treated respectfully with lots of acknowledgement for a job well done
-Pay is above minimum wage
-Very flexible re time off e.g. if DS wants the time off for a festival, they'll just not put him on rota those days and probably give him the hours at another time.
-Structured training, so he's never dropped in the deep-end when taking on a new task, even though most are quite straightforward.

  • Good communication re shifts etc

I'm not sure what I was expecting but I've been impressed. I'd prefer he doesn't stay there forever but short-term, I did far worse jobs as a youngster.

I’ve only heard good things too OP.

TeachesOfPeaches · 16/08/2019 17:18

I've heard good things also and often see them talked about in a positive way on MN and Reddit.

Drogosnextwife · 16/08/2019 17:20

My brother worked for them and said they were horrendous. Always putting him in for shifts he couldn't work even although he told them he was at uni before starting but they don't care. Their staff turnover is huge, not really surprising.

stucknoue · 16/08/2019 17:24

They were excellent when dd worked for them, dealt brilliantly with mental health issues too. It's not well paid but a guarantee of 30 hours a week and they offered promotion after 9 months, they have asked her to return once she completes her degree for the management programme

munemema · 16/08/2019 17:24

Maybe things have changed now then Drogosnextwife and I'm sure it must depend to some extent on the local management but DS has logged days/times he can't work on their online system and they just don't put him on shift then.

I think the staff turnover is high because a lot of people (like DS) see it as a temporary job while they're studying for something else.

Where DS is, they seem to have a mixture of students/school kids and more long term people - there are people who have been there 5 years+

They're pretty good to fair and I'm sure they have a McDonald's University for the staff who want to advance further.

Lwmommy · 16/08/2019 17:30

I've heard great things about company progression. Worked with a group of their execs and senior teams for a while and most had started as crew and moved up.

Ginisatonic · 16/08/2019 17:30

They are franchises and so will vary. DD1 worked for them the summer before starting uni and they were terrible. Zero hours contracts and they always gave her shifts she couldn’t do despite letting them know well in advance. DD2 is currently working for them in her uni town and they are excellent. Give her the shifts she wants and treats them well.
All down to local owners and managers.

LemonScentedStickyBat · 16/08/2019 17:33

A friend of mine had a good experience working for them in two different cities

Doormat247 · 16/08/2019 17:53

Never worked there myself but in my usual McDonalds they've employed a guy who is at least in his 70s and some kids that quite obviously have ASD - was nice to see they're willing to take on those that others wouldn't employ, especially the old guy (he's very slow but the most pleasant member of the team to deal with)

Minai · 16/08/2019 18:19

I worked for them about 10 years ago. Overall a good employer, treated me well. One bad point was that you get your own till float in the morning (but you are not the only person to use it throughout the day) and if the till is down any money at the end of the day or has taken any fake notes then it is deducted from your wage and there is nothing you can do from it. Very unfair imho. I wouldn’t have minded as much if it was only me using it but several other staff are on and off your till throughout the day. I lost a few hours wages that I could not afford to lose several times

thethoughtfox · 16/08/2019 18:19

Excellent training and management experience which can lead to management positions in other companies.

mumofpickles · 16/08/2019 18:54

I worked with them through A Levels and university across 4 different stores, all were excellent but all were part of the chain and not franchises. I then went full time before my Pgce for a year and completed their management training which was really rigerous. They treat their staff better than many school SLT I have since worked with and the ongoing training is excellent. However franchise restaurants are only as good as the franchisee and not all follow the company guidelines.

If that would have taken you below minimum wage overall, not sure that's legal...

lucysmam · 16/08/2019 20:49

Not brilliant tbh. 0 hours contract. Scheduled for shifts I couldn't work (dd's in primary school & not able to account for childcare on 0 hours). 1 shift every 3rd week so I asked for a couple more & was told to "pick up" what they text/emailed as available (dead easy to do with kids to think about Hmm).

Stood & watched a manager count my till wrong twice (mis counted notes) asked for a witness before she went for a third & she asked me to sign paperwork to say it was down before asking another manager to re-count. I refused & the second manager counted correctly. Didn't go back after that. Seemed very odd & wasn't in my contract or explained at any point that I was liable for any shortfall ( I was the only person, so far as I noticed, to actually read it at the "welcome meeting").
