Not me, 7yo dd2. Keys in the boot, car and boot locked. What the hell do I do? We're on holiday so spare key is miles away. Who do I call, ghostbusters? AA? Trying not to be cross at dd but aargh!!

Are you with the AA? I had to call them when i did the same.

bobstersmum · 16/08/2019 16:09

How did it lock if the keys are in the boot? Sorry to be thick!

Penguincity · 16/08/2019 16:09

My dp did this and youtubed how to break into his car, make and model, it worked was quite an old car so don't know if that helped

Lellochip · 16/08/2019 16:11

Call your breakdown, I did exactly the same and the guy who came out said he'd managed to break into hundreds of cars, and only had to resort to window-smashing 3 times.

(Sadly mine was the third Sad)

Rockbird · 16/08/2019 16:16

DD didn't unlock the whole car, just the boot. So the car was already locked and the boot re-locked when she shut it.

DH on the phone to the AA and he's pissed off with me because the spare key is at home Hmm

62 reg which is neither old enough to break into easily or new enough to have some funky system. Alas.

Bobster, you can open the boot independently of the rest of the car in many cases. Then when you close it it will lock again automatically. So if you had put the keys down inside the boot before shutting it and forgotten to pick them up then they would be locked inside the car.

I have a horror of potentially doing this and have got into the habit of putting the keys in my jeans pocket while I am loading or unloading.

OP, I would call the AA or any breakdown organisation you are a member of. You won't be the first to have done this.

Topseyt · 16/08/2019 16:21

Tell DH that he has no right to be pissed off at you for this. So you didn't bring the spare key with you. Neither did he.

Rockbird · 16/08/2019 16:22

DH has discovered the phone operator is working from home and has a dog there. She's on his Christmas card list now... Hmm

RAC got into my car in seconds when I managed to lock the keys AND ds3 inside. Ds3 slept through the whole thing.

msmith501 · 16/08/2019 16:38

Is there any truth in the idea that someone else can use the spare via a mobile phone and the noise it transmits to your own phone (or a borrowed one) can sometimes open the car...?

Rockbird · 16/08/2019 16:43

A friend and I tried that and it didn't seem to work, assuming we were doing it properly.

Dockray · 16/08/2019 16:45

Dh did that to me when we were on holiday. AA man got into the car in about 20 seconds flat. Dh still hasn't lived it down and it was years ago.

How did it lock? My car won’t let me lock the keys inside.

WhatHaveIFound · 16/08/2019 17:25

DH did that in a hire car once and after several fraught calls to the car hire company (he was running tight on a flight) they told him to break a window and use the boot release!

FinallyHere · 16/08/2019 17:29

pissed off with me because the spare key is at home

I agree that it makes send to always have the spare key around, especially when you are away from home. Why is it your job to remember the spare key?

We each have the other's spare key on our key ring, so usually have spare keys handy.

AJPTaylor · 16/08/2019 17:36

AA sorted it for me. They used a mini inflatable thing to slightly open the door and then a wire to hook the internal handle.

Rockbird · 16/08/2019 17:39

AA man scratching his head. Car alarm going off every few minutes. It's not looking good.

OP posts:
Rockbird · 16/08/2019 17:41

DH was banned from my spare key because he's constantly losing his. So it kind of is my fault in a way. Of course with hindsight I can see that the spare key should be wherever we are, if we're away from home.

This happened to us.. we got the RAC out and they got into the car by forcing something between the door and the car.. they then used a rod to open the car door.. did take some time but we got there in the end.. body work is slightly damaged around the door Angry

Rockbird · 16/08/2019 17:46

Bum. Don't want damage, I love my car Sad It's nothing special but I still love it and look after it.

It's tough being a parent, half of me is comforting dd2 and telling her it's not her fault (she's really upset) and the other half of me (that I'm hiding very well) wants to scream!

OP posts:
tellelle · 16/08/2019 17:51

It isn't loads of damage, just small chips to the paint which could easily be repaired..

It was my DP who locked ours in the car and I didn't even have to give him a hard time as he was doing that himself Grin

What is the AA man doing to try and get in?

Rockbird · 16/08/2019 17:52

Hurrah! He's a bloody hero. 🌟
