Holiday home: bedbugs or fleas?

We are on our last night in a holiday cottage and I think the place has either bed bugs or fleas. I don’t dare check until our last morning (tomorrow) because I’ll just vom everywhere. I’ve only concluded it this morning after dh noticed some bites yesterday morning and dd also had some bites yesterday morning which kept her awake all night.

Fucks sake.

We are too far from home to go today due to the bad weather but will go tomorrow.

My main concern is that our clothes/bags could be infested and we end up bringing the fuckers home. Shit. Has anyone got any tips to minimise/prevent this? I’m more worried about bed bugs - we don’t have dogs or cats so I don’t think the fleas would last long.

I will of course contact the agents today.

Cat fleas do last and don't mind living off you in the absence of a cat. But it properly won't be cat fleas in a holiday home.

where are the bites? ankles? legs? arms? random ones on hands and necks? or more torso plus limbs?

It’s a holiday home which allows dogs - which is why I thought maybe fleas but I didn’t know the difference between cat and dog fleas, thank you!

My dh has bites on his hand/wrists.

Dd has bites all over - back of leg, torso, arms etc. She seems to be having quite a bad reaction to them. She likes to move about a lot in bed as she gets hot and chucks her covers off her.

We have had bed bugs before - suspected from a friend who’d come back from travelling and their kids came to visit us, playing in Ds’s room where they were found 😬 so DH’s bites look similar. Dd wasn't affected them as she didn’t sleep in the infested room.

That’s why I think it’s probably bed bugs 🙈

Flea bites are generally very small and in straight lines but horribly itchy.

Google pictures of bed bug bites and you should be able to narrow down the culprits.

Flea bites are actually fairly large and they prefer to bite around ankles or lower legs but they will bite everywhere if the infestation is particularly bad. Best way to catch fleas is setting up a trap. On a night leave out bowls of water near a lamp, they are attracted to the light so jump into the water and drown.

They can and do live for a very long time without an animal host.

As said flea bites tend to be concentrated on the lower leg/ankles.
