Someone has cut my hedge

I got home yesterday to find that half of my hedge has been cut Hmm

For context, the garden has needed a tremendous amount of work here. I do not proclaim to be a super gardener, but the hedge has improved a lot since we've been here with the right pruning - I am always out in the garden. This year, I have been letting the top of it grow up to even out the height ready for cutting in the autumn. To get home and find (half) of the top of it has been cut right back, and wonky, has made me quite cross.

Neighbour on the opposite side has no idea what's happened, neighbour on the side with the hedge is (so far) ignoring my text.

So as not to drip feed, the hedge is entirely on my land, it is not 'on the boundary' and therefore on my neighbour's land. The half that has been cut actually protrudes into my garden as it grew wonky, meaning my neighbour has some of my front garden. Prizes for guessing how long it's going to stay like that now!

Providing it is the neighbour, how do I be firm but fair in discussing this with them? I want to make it very clear that they are not to do anything on my property ever, but I don't want to fall out. This neighbour has told me that they felt out with the people who lived in our house before us. I think the friendship is definitely dented now though Sad

So they don't like your hedge. I would be putting up a very high and ugly fence - I think you can go to 2 meters without planning permission- just on the boundary

Scruffalicious · 16/08/2019 12:03

Holy moly. I'm going to put the kettle on.

Really glad you have cctv - that's shocking.

sunshinefinally · 16/08/2019 12:11

That's awful how dare they! Good luck OP

flumpybear · 16/08/2019 12:12

What a liberty!! Bastards, can't believe there's a reasonable explanation...

CoraPirbright · 16/08/2019 12:15

Fantastic that you have them on cctv - tell them that you are going to the police and are going to have them done for criminal damage and it will be a slam dunk case.

I mean seriously - who the bloody hell do these people think they are??

CacenCrunch · 16/08/2019 12:24

Cheeky fuckers

Apolloanddaphne · 16/08/2019 12:24

It i so bonkers that it is not even the people who OP backs onto who did this (not that they would have been in the right either, but it would make more sense). What on earth would anyone else have to gain? Looking forward to you reporting back on your door knocking rampage OP!

WindFlower92 · 16/08/2019 12:25

I would hate this! I second the idea to put out fliers for their services Grin

bluetue · 16/08/2019 12:28

Have they done a good job?

Could they come and do mine?

MeltingSugs · 16/08/2019 12:31

I'm back. Need a sugary tea before I tell you the spiel they've spun. Probably very boring as it's not like I have much comeback (although nice neighbour has an idea that they're coming back to me with Wink)

Does anyone know if there is an issue (legally) with me uploading the CCTV to YouTube for you all to see?

Even if I post some stills it shows the height cut off. Next door has dug their drive out so it slopes up to their house, whereas even my front garden is a good 18 inches higher than their's. Standing on my lawn, the hedge is barely 1.1m tall now.

Load away op!

flumpybear · 16/08/2019 12:40

Bung it on YouTube and delete if necessary ... I wouldn't though cheeky fuckers!! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Belgravian · 16/08/2019 12:43

@bluetue the hedge has been butchered as per the comments and photos on the thread.

CoraPirbright · 16/08/2019 12:56

.....not like you have much comeback?

They came onto your property uninvited and hacked a hedge that is not theirs and is not on a boundary! That’s criminal damage!!

MelanieFrontage · 16/08/2019 12:57

Yes, surely this has to be trespassing and criminal damage?

Outlookmainlyfair · 16/08/2019 13:04

I can't understand why neighbours would behave like this - cropping n their own doorstep.
The hedge will regrow but the trust and friendship won't.
You need a god strategy to focus on the outcome you want long term - rather than just venting your anger short term.

PristineCondition · 16/08/2019 13:10

Aww they've done such a shite jobSad

averylongtimeago · 16/08/2019 13:10

I said earlier to get a high fence- but I have changed my mind.
A lot of my neighbours use this stuff (am in France) it is easy and relatively cheap to put up and (an added bonus) quickly looks faded and naff. You won't see it as it will be hidden by the hedge, but they will get the full benefit.

You have cctv of them on your land damaging your property. I would consultant a lawyer for advice.

Greenkit · 16/08/2019 13:24

Place marking :)

Choice4567 · 16/08/2019 13:29

Hedge place marking

NotWavingButMNing · 16/08/2019 13:29

Wow that's outrageous. Hard to see how your hedge offended them.
What sort of hedge is it?

TinselAndKnickers · 16/08/2019 13:50

Tell us the tale! Cheeky bastards
