What age did/do you let DC have access to the internet?

DC are 7&9. Rarely have homework so their exposure to the internet is when they ask me e.g. how motors work or which is the fastest bird and I have to look it up. They do get iPad time but only when disconnected from the WiFi.

I hear about kids choosing and watching you tube programs and stuff and wonder how the parents police it.

Mine do occasionally watch you tube but over the tv and I put it on, they don't have free choice or search themselves.

And they will be allowed unsupervised access at 18.

Mine are 4 and 8. 4 year old watched YouTube kids and eldest normal in restricted mode . I let them watch what they want within reason . They watch it out loud so can hear what they are watching .

Once they’re in secondary school. Partly because of the independent journey, and partly because the school expects them to have a device in order to access homework. The device has very locked down settings, and deliberately low data, and our (and I assume school’s) WiFi has parental controls.

@helpmeiamatoad would love to know in a few years if your children completely rebel! £10 says they will.

DS is 3, he usually watches downloaded stuff on the ipad.
Or I sit next to him (while usually watching tv and half paying attention) while he watches transport videos on youtube kids or plays games on the bbc kids island app.
(tiny boast...he can type out train all by himself)

Oh and I let him use the remote..I suppose that's got the internet on it.

Ds is 3 and has a kids kindle fire. He mainly uses it in the car. He plays jigsaw games and watches kids YouTube on it.

We don't limit access at the moment because he favours actually playing with his toys over the tablet however would limit if it became a problem. I don't understand all out banning the internet/technology. It's an essential part of the world we live in now whether we like it or not.

My dc have used you tube since they were 2 and 4. They are now 6 and 8 and can Google things they are interested in.

DC are 8 and 11 and have a shared tablet which can access the internet (with some standard blocking software to try to cut out porn). But they only use it for short times with close supervision,

e.g.

  • mum - can I play the Harry Potter app for 10 mins?
  • mum - can I look up pictures of a horse to copy for my drawing?
  • mum - can I look up how to make slime?
  • mum - can we listen to spotify while we play?

will all probably get a Yes, but just looking a YouTube for no purpose or general 'playing' or anything where I am not in the room will get a no.

I want them to learn to use the internet for all the good things that are there, but to not randomly come across bad things.

DD now has a phone for commuting to school, but that is also locked down and closely supervised. I can see what sites she visits and monitor all her conversations with friends.
