Does anyone commute from south London to North London by car?

I live in Lewisham, and have been offered a job near Alexander Palace. I'm disabled so public transport is not a realistic option.
Am I crazy considering this commute 5 days a week? I think if there are no traffic it'll be ok. But in all likelihood there are going to be, aren't there?!

I think it would be tough. I’d expect that journey to take at least 1.5 hours depending on time of day. Can you flex the hours so you start and finish early?

underneaththeash · 15/08/2019 22:37

That would be a horrendous commute, unless you’re travelling at 2am!
Could you move?

Haworthia · 15/08/2019 22:38

Used to do it on the tube, and that was bad enough.

georgialondon · 15/08/2019 22:51

Sounds like a dreadful idea!

RandomMess · 15/08/2019 23:04

Shock😳

Insanity

Would sooner commute London - Bristol on a daily basis. It'll be an horrendous journey.

EmpressJewel · 16/08/2019 08:41

Would you be able to have amended start and finish time to avoid the rush hour commute?

Anotherusefulname · 16/08/2019 08:47

I don't know London at all, but I do know that a trip across Birmingham can take an hour and a half at rush hour.
I can only imagine that London must be the same or more likely worse.

SarahBeeney · 16/08/2019 08:55

Presumably it's 9-5 hours? In which case it could take a while.
I live in Forest hill and worked at Ally Pally in June (for 2 weeks). I was working evenings though. It was easy on the train, overground (ginger line) to Highbury and then another train to Ally Pally. Only one change!
However I'm aware you're not on the overground at Lewisham.
I guess you'd have to try it out in the car? I would recommend Waze. I wouldn't fancy a commute like that 5 days a week though and driving is exhausting compared to sitting on the train.

I think if there are no traffic it'll be ok

But when is there no traffic in London? Even at 2am the roads aren’t clear.

MakeLemonade · 16/08/2019 09:38

I don’t think it will be much fun. What about driving to a better train station?

TapasForTwo · 16/08/2019 09:45

It will impact your quality of life massively in a negative way. Driving in stop-start traffic for 4 hours a day would be very tiring. Then you have the congestion charge.

I wouldn't do it.

Tube worker here.

Depending on your extra need, I think it might take just as long on PT as by car. I just looked at TfL's journey planner and put in that you needed a step free journey (Apologies if this isn't what you need, I made a huge presumption) and it was epic:

21 bus to Borough.
Northern line to Euston
Victoria line Euston to Finsbury Park.
Walk to Finsbury Park bus station.
W3 bus to Ally Pally.

Total time (if everything is working) 1 hour and 54 minutes!!Shock

Of course you can't come back the same way as Borough is not step free southbound Hmm.

If you have the car, use it. I would try and negotiate a "reasonable adjustment" with your employer because of your disability. Negotiate a time change, maybe an earlier start, saying you need to use your car because PT is just too much for you.

(I have anxiety and when I have to go to training it usually begins at 9am, which means travelling at Peak times. So I set off at 7am and camp out in the staffroom or cafe until the course is about to start. If I am an hour early, so be it, as long as I don't get so squashed I want to cry)

Spidey66 · 16/08/2019 10:10

I live in Ally Pally and doubt I'd consider commuting to Lewisham every day.

I'll take the job, and have zilch commuting!

AvengerDanvers95 · 16/08/2019 10:17

Last night I drove from Edmonton to Stratford, which would be less than half of your journey home. Just that bit took 45 minutes due to traffic. Sitting queuing for the Blackwall Tunnel Every. Single. Day. Omg no thanks.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 16/08/2019 10:29

Fuck no.

I'd move house or take a different job. Even on public transport as a relatively able bodied person I wouldn't want to do it.

stucknoue · 16/08/2019 10:45

Unless it's off peak it's not feasible, traffic is crazy
