Can anyone recommend me a good pest control (dog fleas) in Somerset. Got to break cycle dog clear but house has them. I phoned up a few and they want £180 I can afford under £60. Ho hum...

Have you used indorex in the house?

Bearnecessity · 15/08/2019 21:15

Yes 1 can in a small 2 bed terrace house.Maybe I need another can?

Have you been hoovering regularly to get the fleas to hatch so they can be killed by the indorex?

diet4eva · 15/08/2019 21:19

Can you beg, borrow or buy a steam cleaner? Once you have treated the dog you need to steam clean everything- carpets, sot furnishings and hard floors in particular any cracks or crevices where fleas thrive. I had the same problem with my house when we moved In and steam was the only thing that helped as it destroys the adults and the eggs. You also need flea tablets from the vet - nothing else works. Hope you get sorted

diet4eva · 15/08/2019 21:20

I might add When I say you need flea tablets I mean the dog not humans !!!

dementedpixie · 15/08/2019 21:22

There are spot on treatments that work too

dementedpixie · 15/08/2019 21:23

And if the dog is treated (with a vet treatment) it will also help kill any fleas that hatch

Bearnecessity · 15/08/2019 21:33

Hi thank you, the dog is treated every month with a very well known spot on that has worked very well for 6+ years. I will take to vet soon if I cannot shift.I have been hoovering regularly but will try the steam clean and another indorex, the dog is clean I combed today no fleas but a few eggs. I don't want to apply anymore spot on or I will be double dosing and he is only a little jack Russell.

It's not frontline is it?

PasDeGeeGees · 15/08/2019 21:35

The fleas might be becoming resistant to that particular treatment if you have been using it for that long, so it might be worth a visit to the vet to see if there is something more suitable.

dementedpixie · 15/08/2019 21:36

Frontline not supposed to be that effective now if that's what you're using

diet4eva · 15/08/2019 21:37

I used spot on treatments for years but recently they have stopped working - you need to get some tablets from the vet. I thought I was going mad and could t understand why the treatments weren't working - 1 trip to the vet All was sorted

VictoriaBun · 15/08/2019 21:39

When you say a very good spot on, are you getting them direct from the vet ?
There are many brands that are available but the ones that you purchase from pet shops etc are of a lesser strength than the same name prescription ones from the vets.

Bearnecessity · 15/08/2019 21:44

Yes Frontline...I was trying to avoid the vet as the treatments look very chemically...mad I know...but it looks like I have no other choice.

Have you tried your local council? Might be cheaper than a private company.

dementedpixie · 15/08/2019 21:47

Think advantage can be bought in places like pets at home without prescription. It has the same flea ingredient as advocate which is prescription only (but also treats worms)

diet4eva · 15/08/2019 21:50

Frontline is no longer effective as fleas are now immune to it

Bearnecessity · 15/08/2019 21:57

I did try my local Council but they no longer have pest control services!I did ask what I pay my extortionate council tax for?

My dog has recently bought fleas home. So far we bathed the dog with some flea shampoo, put on a flea drop stuff, put on a flea collar. Went to wilkos and bought loads of flea powder, spray and flea bombs. Haven't noticed any in the house but I've hoovered then powdered then hoovered again, bombed the main rooms he uses. Sprayed the sofas, got rid of his bed. All clothes washed and put through the dryer, all bedding washed and dried daily, now only finding the occasional one on the dog, hopefully with another few days of hoover, powder, hoover, bomb. We break the cycle.

Bearnecessity · 15/08/2019 22:13

It s a nightmare isn't it, I am exhausted with doing similar.

It is a pain. I live in a 3 story house, today it took nearly 3 hours to powder all rooms top to bottom and then hoover it all. I'm scared my hoover and washer is going to give up with the over usage.

Bearnecessity · 16/08/2019 15:48

Good luck sounds like your nearly there...I soldier on...

Does anyone know how often I should be treating the floors with powder etc? Since finding fleas I have hoovered daily top to bottom, twice using powder, used the bomb things in the rooms I can contain, got rid of all soft furnishings possible like dog bed and cushions, bedding is washed and dried every other day, last night I hoovered and steam cleaned the sofa and living room floor then hoovered again. How often should I powder the carpets or use the bombs? Dog has been bathed twice with flea shampoo and had drops applied, also has a flea collar on.
