Tips to stop kitchen bin smelling

So as above, my kitchen bin is constantly stinking in this warm weather! It's really starting to drive me mad. I've been washing it out every week, wiping it down near enough every day and changing the bag as often as possible but it still stinks!

I live on my own so would feel really wasteful to change the bag every day as it wouldn't even be half full. I have a cat and I know it's mostly her food that'll be making the smell but don't know what else to do with it other than chuck what she doesn't eat in the bin? I rinse out the pouches before I bin them and there wasn't a little food bin when I moved in either.

Any tips? Do those bin powders work? I just imagine them to mix the horrible smell with an artificial flowery smell...

Thanks in advance!

Contact your council for a food waste bin, if not freeze any leftovers until collection day.

Make sure any waste is as clean as possible. Pouches can be recycled via terra cycle.

Keep the bin out of direct sunlight.

Feed the cat tinned food and wash the tins out. If you are throwing food away you are feeding the cat too much so cut down portions.

Get a smaller bin so it'll naturally need emptying more often. Much easier to clean too. Should be no problem if it's just you at home especially if you recycle most of your rubbish.

Zoflora soaked kitchen roll in the bottom of the bin under the bag

No food waste in the inside bin, ever.

Biological washing powder in bottom of bin before bag. Smells lovely, the enzymes kill the bacteria that cause bad smells and it soaks up any 'bin juice' Smile

If I throw away any left over cat food I tend to scrape it on a bit of foil, and scrunch up before throwing in the bin. Seems to do the trick.

Thanks all!! Will try your tips and also get on to the council about a food waste bin.

Sprinkle a layer of bicarbonate if soda in the bottom. It absorbs smells.

We used to have a snap shut box that we used for food waste keep at the top of the fridge them move to the freezer

If you do have a food collection you can wrap food waste/cat food in newspaper and freeze straight away..

Then put out on bin day

Don't put food waste in the kitchen bin. Doesn't your council recycle it? If you have to throw food waste out, scrape it into a compostable food bin liner (very cheap at Lidl) hidden in a corner of your freezer until bin collection day. We are a family of 4 and use a standard sized bucket stored in the undersink cupboard for our general waste as I can't stand bins on display in the kitchen. It rarely needs emptying more than every other day.

@Nextphonewontbesamsung I'm sure they do because my mum has a food waste bin outside her house and it's the same council, so not sure why I've not got one. I bought my flat last year and there wasn't one when I moved in, just the green general waste bin and the blue one for plastic etc. I'll need to phone and ask about it.

What I do is I put a capful of zoflora on some kitchen paper and put it at the bottom of the bin before I put the bag in. Another thing I started doing very recently is Neutradol sell some bin refreshing powders. I have the citrus scented one and every time my bin starts smelling a bit funny, I sprinkle some in there and it goes straight away.

Have done the zoflora trick tonight and good to know about the powders, I had seen them before but wasn't sure if they actually worked. Have also moved the bin from under the window to see if that helps. You've all been so helpful!!
