Help needed please Edwards menagerie?

New to crochet and patterns here. Can anyone help explain what is probably a very simple question?
I cannot work out what the numbers in brackets mean. Is it the number of total stitches in the round (which doesn't add up mathematically) or the number of stitches just done. I tried the latter and once I got the the dc4 in one stitch it seemed very flutey and lop sided?
Thanks

It’s the number of stitches in that row you have just completed

RobinHumphries · 15/08/2019 18:17

Dc4 means dc once into the next 4 stitches and then do 2 dcs into the next stitch

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 15/08/2019 18:17

It should be the number of stitches in the round. So round 1 you are doing 2 doubles into each stitch ie 12 stitches total. Round 2 you are doing 1 double into a stitch, then 2 doubles into the next stitch, repeat 6 times, so 18 stitches total. Make sense?

The first # in the bracket is single dcs then you do 2 dcs in the same stitch at the end.

RobinHumphries · 15/08/2019 18:21

Sorry that last sentence was explaining rnd 5
So start off with foundation ring of 6
Rnd 1 dc2 into each stitch so now 12 stitches
Rnd 3 dc into first stitch, into 2nd stitch dc twice and repeat so at the end 18 stitches
Hopefully that makes sense

Yes, it’s the total number of stitches in that row or round.

So round 3, you’re startjng with 18 stitches and ending with 24. You’re going to repeat the same set of stitches 6 times (most patterns like this work in groups of six)

So it says (dc2, dc2 into next stitch) six times

This actually means double crochet in the first stitch, double crochet in the second stitch, 2 x double crochet in the third stitch.

When it says DC4 in a later round, it doesn’t mean 4 double crochets in the same stitch - it means one double crochet in each of the next four stitches.

Thanks all. I knew I'd find help here. 20 years ago I would have had to wait 2 weeks until I saw someone who does crochet...🤣

I really recommend the website Ravelry - the forum there is amazing, instant responses from very skilled people day and night, super handy when learning!

MashedSpud ha ha photo only if it works! This is my very first one! It's grey wool so it will either be a rhino 🦏 or elephant 🐘, I haven't decided yet. The Edwards Menagerie stuff is lovely though.

Working on danaries targarian or whatever her name is
Love amigurumi

When you’re done, have a look at the Lalylala patterns on Etsy - I’ve made so many of them for my boys and love them. Now working on some large ones (which will definitely not be finished in time for their birthday).

If you’re lookinh for yarn to make lovely soft toys, that’s really affordable (compared to Toft!) have a look at the drops 4ply yarns especially the pure alpaca and alpaca silk, or the wool and alpaca blends in heavier weights. Their cotton yarns are also brilliant for amigurumi.
