Wicked the Musical

Went yesterday. Am I alone in thinking it's not all that? Ok, the performances and dancing were good (the two lead actresses had amazing voices) but the plot was weak and a lot of the songs were meh.

At the end though the audience all leapt to their feet like it was the most incredible thing they'd ever seen. It's got nothing in Matilda or The Lion King IMO and I didn't see a standing ovation at those. I guess it's personal taste but I think I must really be missing something here. Both my DC agreed with me though.

And don't get me started on the constant chat / noise / fidgeting / noisy eating and drinking in the audience (adults as well as kids). I know it's a kids show but I've been to pantomimes with quieter audiences.

I'm afraid I've seen it sung at one too many Year 11 leaving assemblies!

I like Wicked but I was utterly unimpressed with Matilda. Some songs were catchy but I couldn’t hear the words and the lyrics are what Tim Minchin excels at.

Thats a shame. We saw Matilda from cheap seats and thought it was excellent. The kids were phenomenal. School Song is very clever in its word play.

Loved Wicked, have seen it three times, twice with my daughter who loves it as much as me.

I’m not keen on the more opera like songs but do love it. However both my mum and I are rubbish at hearing a song and truly hearing and taking in lyrics. My mum wasn’t keen but turns out she had missed huge chunks of plot and storyline where as I read the lyrics when listening to the soundtrack in advance so got all the details

Just back from having watched Wicked and feel exactly like the OP - had to come on here to see if it was just me. Was so underwhelmed and cannot believe it has been on for so long. Only went because of kids go free offer. Kids did enjoy it but did not get the feeling that they came out on a high - like we did from Matilda and School of Rock.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 17/08/2019 00:13

I found it really really tedious it went on and on and on

DS went to see it with his friends (birthday treat) when I asked how did he enjoy it he replied ‘it was four hours long mummy’ Grin not quite but feels it and some

I thought it was poor
I wasn’t overly impressed with the lion king
I feel the stage show jars with the pumba bit
South Pacific was the best I’ve seen

Dowser · 17/08/2019 00:37

I loved phantom and godspell

Dowser · 17/08/2019 00:42

Just seen twelfth night at the rose pop up theatre york
I thought it incredible
Not a musical as such but I was very surprised at how much music there was in it
It’s on till end of August
Very very funny

OhMyDarling · 17/08/2019 00:48

Yeah I don’t rate Wicked either.
Lion King.... bloody amazing! Loved Matilda too.
Chicago- amazing, 42nd Street- wow!
But Wicked?? Meh.

PamelaTodd · 17/08/2019 00:48

I can’t understand how Gregory Maguire could have written such a brilliant and important allegory and allowed that travesty of a musical to happen.
Elphaba didn’t care about being popular or want to change the colour of her skin. It’s so absurdly twee.
The book is stunning in the way it takes a simple, popular story and opens your eyes to a whole different interpretation of the politics of Oz. It has important things to say about prejudice, collusion and genocide.

I couldn’t believe how inane the musical was. It bears no relation to the book whatsoever. Just awful.

OhMyDarling · 17/08/2019 00:49

Oh and ‘Defying Gravity’ makes me want to rip my ears off.

ExpletiveDelighted · 17/08/2019 07:32

I found the book in a charity shop yesterday, will read with interest.
