Someone knocking on door...

I know it sounds like nothing but someone was tapping on my front door at midnight.
I live in a small village, terraced house in small estate. Neighbours all have my mobile no so if one of them were locked out I would expect them to text, and also to call thru the letterbox.
Not a chance it's a friend or family member - they are all at least 20 miles away.
After the first tap (which I initially thought was next door) I went downstairs - thinking it was prob a takeaway for next door or a friend of the 20 something calling to her on the way home from the pub.
But had a look and realised my sliding porch door was open - and I had closed it when I came in round 9pm.
10 mins later they tapped again 4 or 5 times. No way I'm opening the door this time of night! I live on my own (well with 2 cats who are hiding under the bed) so I am just posting till I stop being freaked out and can go asleep. Seems to be all quiet now...

My dog suddenly went crackers the other night, of course just as dh is away. Dog never normally barks. I put on all lights, outdoor lights and called the rcmp. Don't care if it was an over reaction. Apparently several other houses on the street had their sheds robbed that evening. I've left the outside lights on an intermittent timer since. Helps that the dog is huge and loud! I don't think I could live alone without the dog.

Well nothing more happened (except I had a crap night's sleep). Will be putting security measures in place after work tonight. Thanks all for the company.

Yes royalton I just get lamps and mechanical timers from Argos. Have the lights on timers all the time as it means I can go to bed and if kids want to potter about downstairs for a bit I don’t have to worry they’ve left the lights on all night.

bluetue · 15/08/2019 08:22

Black eyed children would be my first thought. 😱

You are very brave OP

Likethebattle · 15/08/2019 08:34

Get a lock on the porch too and a peephole.

Spacerader · 15/08/2019 09:46

I agree with others, get a lock in the porch. It adds another layer of protection. And surely an unlocked porch makes its easier for someone to break into your house as they are less visible to people outside.

HappyParent2000 · 15/08/2019 09:49

Happend to us at 2am

Was a guy with case of beer and a pizza box.

We didn’t turn any lights on etc and they went away if their own accord.

We all just went back to bed!

Maybe should have done something different but hey it probably was just the wrong house.

We occasionally get a wrong Just Eat order to our door, one was at midnight!

AgentProvocateur · 15/08/2019 09:58

Those of you who suggested calling the police - what exactly do you think the police will do? 😂😂

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 15/08/2019 10:13

Probably the wind OP

I had this one year at my parents . Middle of the night and heard the letter box go .. Turns out the wind done it .

littlewoollypervert · 15/08/2019 11:24

I've looked up patio door locks and will put one on later.

@bluetue - don't! I live on my own! Grin

Definitely not the wind - the letterbox flap is on a very strong spring - plus the noise was tapping on the glass of the front door, not knocking on the letterbox. I've lived there for 17 years so I know the noises of the house well, and I've a tendency to leave the doors ajar so sound travels (and I don't have to get out of bed to let the furry arseholes/cats in and out twenty times a night).

I'd love a dog but work full time with a long commute, wouldn't be fair on one even with doggy daycare. I might see can I get a good recording of a big dog barking from YouTube and play it if I hear any more noises.

Both the inside and outside doors are glass - I think it's time to change the inside door to a solid one...

I may call to the Garda station after work - more for tips on security and to see if there are other reports of this type of thing going around. Going to feel like a right eejit walking in and saying "Someone knocked on my door last night!"

When I say doors ajar, I mean the inside doors of course, not the outside doors...

OP, it is worth telling the police because they’ll know if there’s a prowler around. In my area they tweet about it if they think it’s happening on a particular evening.

I would definitely want a solid door btw.

louisvootin · 15/08/2019 22:20

How r u now op? Did u get this sorted x

Frith2013 · 15/08/2019 22:24

Why didn’t you just look out of the window?!

Surely people phone the police because someone knocked on their door.
