Can I feed my baby venison?

Not sure if this is a silly question. He is under 1 but doing well with weaning, has tried most things. We have a freezer full of venison mince, and was hoping to use it instead of beef mince to make up some meals like cottage pie/spag bol. Can't see anything obvious on Google to suggest I can't, but can't really find any information to say I can either!

I can’t see why not! Enjoy Smile

Just be wary that I think venison can very occasionally have bits of shot in it. I think there are sometimes warnings on the packaging. Obviously depends where you got it and if it’s farmed etc

BertrandRussell · 14/08/2019 09:34

Venison shouldn’t have bits of shot in it. Some game- like pheasant might- but you don’t kill a deer with a shotgun, surely?

MustardScreams · 14/08/2019 09:35

Deer aren’t shot with a shotgun, so there’s no lead in it to worry about.

GinGeum · 14/08/2019 09:39

No, it's not shot with a shotgun! (It's from our farm)

I did, it was a great choice because unlike other meats, it just disintegrates in their mouths unlike beef or chicken that went round for yonks like a washing machine. Low fat, high protein and has to be killed on the hoof with a rifle rather than sent to an abattoir.
On the other hand, this was 25+ years ago, so I’m out of date.

GinGeum · 14/08/2019 09:50

November agree with this, I would much rather him have meat that I know exactly where it has come from than from a packet in a supermarket! I'm glad it's okay to give to him :)

Ignore me then Grin getting confused with small game. Sounds a great choice in that case and lovely to have local venison

Teddybear45 · 14/08/2019 09:55

I think the restrictions around wild game / venison are the same around honey. Due to the presence of some bacteria it’s better to wait until after 12 months. In the US and Canada they often wait until 18 months.

NovemberWitch · 14/08/2019 09:59

Like I said, I’m out of date. Mine had venison, honey, peanut butter and all sorts before they were 1. Did b/f until 8 months or so, maybe that’s what saved them.

Barbadosbelle · 17/05/2020 14:46

.

Only if over 18-months,
If under that age then only farmed and NOT wild meat.

Sorry to derail the thread but if it's not shot, how is it killed?

BananaChocolateLump · 17/05/2020 15:10

They run up behind them and shout boo.

Oh that might be geese actually.

Pippinsqueak · 17/05/2020 15:10

Its killed with a rifle which is a billet as opposed to a shotgun cartridge which has lead pellets

Can't kill a deer with a shotgun

Pippinsqueak · 17/05/2020 15:11

Bullet*

Winegumaddict · 17/05/2020 15:12

I'm pretty sure I did. We have venison from our farm along with pheasants etc. If we ate it so did they. They are well past weaning and still love most food.
