What do you think a cleaner should do?

I've been lucky enough to have a cleaner for a while. The house always looks presentable when she's been here ( she has a lot of time here). I give her addition jobs to do on an occasional basis spread over the extra time like wiping the leather sofas etc.
The cleaner has disappeared in an impromptu very long holiday and I've been doing the cleaning. I've discovered the house is actually filthy. Skirting boards and pictures are thick black dust.therr are cobwebs around all the corners and behind the furniture. Under the sofas which weigh nothing there is thick dust etc.
I can clean this myself in less time than the cleaner and move lightweight furniture etc.the extra jobs have clearly never been done.
I work long hours and don't want to do the cleaning but wondered what other people think is normal for a cleaner yo do given plenty of time?

Hi
I'm a cleaner at a medical centre and I get 2 and a half hrs, I have about 18 rooms to clean, wipe, mop, empty bins etc I wish I had more time as I would love to do the skirting boards more but it depends on how many rooms and how long she has.

@Adviceplease1986
She had 12 hours a week! 4 beds ( 0ne unused) , 2 baths and an ensuite which isn't used, formal lounge, kitchen family/ room, hall, 2 stairs 2 landings. Dining room currently out of use and DH office banned !!🙄 she does occasional ironing and is supposed to put the odd washload in.

She sounds very lazy. 12 hours a week?! Your house should be gleaming. Mine is here 3 and pulls out furniture to dust/vacuum, cleans windows every week, mops kitchen and bathroom and hoovers and dusts everywhere, high dusts frequently and does stuff I’ve not left on the list if she sees it.

Get a new cleaner.

Word of mouth is often best. Do you have any friends that would recommend theirs? Or trial an agency?

GlamGiraffe · 13/08/2019 16:48

In this area cleaners ate like gold dust everyone wants one and they are like treasure!! Once someone has one they never give up a slot. I'm trialling an agency tomorrow. I'm just worried I might sound like an unreasonable dictator with my requests.

The agency I have someone coming from tomorrow has told me their cleaners ate "trained" to clean kitchen surfaces and move appliances on them to clean beneath, clean bathrooms, dust furniture and mop or vacuum. I asked about skirting or cobwebs and he thought I was nuts. I'll have yo ask the lady. This is why I'm curious what it's normal for cleaners to do.

In my 12 hours per week I have 8 treatment rooms to clean so wipe down and cobwebs and mop each one , then 1 kitchen, 3 toilets , two waiting areas, reception back office and coridoors. So I use all that time and usually stay 10 mins later to finish things. If they are meant to do those items and haven't then advertise again. Are you home when she cleans or out?

NoSauce · 13/08/2019 17:02

No you won’t sound like a dictator, if it’s doable then they should be able to do it in the allocated time.

I think they vary in what they do tbh. My last one was lazy and would only do the bare minimum and if I didn’t ask her to do something it wouldn’t get done even though it was glaringly obvious.

Make a list!

CalmFizz · 13/08/2019 17:02

How is the time divided?

GlamGiraffe · 13/08/2019 17:29

3 days. 4 hours a day. Ive had a list dividing downstairs plus botyom stairs and landing 1st day then upstairs 2nd day. Extra jobs on rotation 3rd day.
She's been really annoyed anm9yed about the schedule!!
I'm much faster and more thorough but I work long hours, have 2 kids including a toddler and would rather have a cleaner. I can definitely do it in the time slots easily with breaks.she has plentiful Nespresso breaks to give her energy!!

I am the slackest of the slack when it comes to cleaning and even I wipe down skirting boards and picture frames every few weeks, keep an eye out for cobwebs and hoover under the sofas every couple of weeks. I expect a cleaner to do things better than I could myself in the time allocated, yours sounds like a chancer!

Adviceplease1986 · 13/08/2019 17:36

4 hours??? Get rid of her she is bloody lucky she should get it done in that time
