Is this rule followed in the UK

Have worked in the US hospitality industry and food on a buffet gets tossed after 2 hours. Has anyone here actually gotten sick of bacteria for eating hot food that wasn't refrigerated within 2 hours? For eg if you bake a cottage pie, take it out of oven to cool but by mistake forget about it, would you still eat in the next day? Just curious. This "rule" drives me nuts however i do apply it for my DS

I would.

But them I'm kind of lax my a lot of standards on here.

Never poisoned me or anyone else I'm aware of.

I work on my grannies rule of thumb - does it look ok, if so smell it. Does it smell ok, if so taste a little bit. Does is taste ok, its probably ok.

I would! No point in wasting good food. It needs to be covered though. I usually put a clean tea towel over it

I think hospitality rules are strict to protect the public. Rules in your home can be as lax as you care to make them. I don’t think anything in my fridge is within its use by date but I will eat it or feed it to my family as I’m confident it won’t kill us or even make us sick. But if I was being paid to feed guests I would follow food hygiene to the letter.

Same rules apply in UK hospitality. Buffet should get chucked after 2 hours. In reality, the staff eat it for their dinner/tea.

It's the same rule in the UK, Google "hot holding rule UK" and it will give you a link to the relevant bit of the Food Standards Agency website. I used to work in a catering related area, and always refrigerate things as soon as they are cool, also do fast cooling and refrigeration of things like rice. I realise I'm probably a bit paranoid though, and expect I will relax a bit as DD gets older.

Yes. I'll eat virtually anything left out overnight as long as it looks and smells ok and it's never made me sick yet.

I would be more cautious about feeding children but still use common sense.

Why did you start two threads? Your other thread has over 40 posts. Bit confusing.
