What to do in Yorkshire Dales

Going away soon for a week in the Yorkshire Dales. We are taking 2 dogs and staying near Gisburn Forest. Can anyone recommend any nice areas to visit? We’d like to visit the beach once, we’ve done Blackpool before but we’re in no rush to return there... was thinking about Morecambe. Any recommendations? Smile

Well drive up into the dales national park... the places you mentioned aren't actually in the Yorkshire Dales... they're in Lancashire!

How about visiting Hawes,Wensleydale Aysgarth Falls etc? Definitely go north from where you are to get into Yorkshire proper!

The Pendle Hill area is nice and nearby but not in the Yorkshire Dales.

You can walk up the hill from Barley village which is a nice village and there is the Pendle witches trail.

Whitby is lovely as is Saltburn but that may be too north for you.

Loads, just look at the map Smile
Malham cove & tarn
Gordale scar
Bolton Abbey
Burnsall, Grassington, and other places on that route
Take a scenic train from Settle across the Ribblehead viaduct

Note that some roads in the North of the dales are currently cut off after bridges were washed away in recent bad weather, but google maps on your phone should highlight which ones.

I think you’ve got plenty to keep you busy around there without heading over to Whitby, it’s nowhere near really.

Beach wise, it’s been a lot of years since I went there, but seem to remember beaches around Southport were good. Look up Ainsdale.

chomalungma · 12/08/2019 07:57

You're in the Yorkshire Dales. That's a nice area in general.

Do you like walking?

wheresmyhairytoe · 12/08/2019 08:00

Whitby is over 2 hours away from there, not close at all.

There's Ingleton, Grassington and Brimham Rocks within 30 to 40 minutes, all nice walks.

Kubo · 12/08/2019 09:29

You might need to start a different thread without Yorkshire in the title if you want beach recommendations, you are very far away from the Yorkshire coast!

As for other suggestions - Malham Cove?

y0rkier0se · 12/08/2019 09:30

Thanks everyone, Whitby is actually closer to home for us Grin I’ve been looking at google maps but it’s hard to know which areas are worth the visit without asking around. We do like walking - with the dogs we try to visit areas where they can be off lead and have a good run (they’re whippets). I’ve made a list and will update when we’re home, thanks Smile

Gisburn Forest itself is good for a walk, with marked walking trails.

Edisford Bridge in Clitheroe, it's a long time family favourite picnic area of mine ,my mum use d to go as a child ,and she took us as children and I take my kids ,perfect for paddling etc .

Raera · 12/08/2019 10:57

Stocks reservoir is a good place for a walk

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 12/08/2019 14:31

I live in the dales (near Settle) and work in the Ribble Valley where Gisburn Forrest is for days out we head to Hawes fab old fashioned park and cheese factory, Kirby Lonsdale, The Lakes, Aysgarth Falls, The Forbidden Corner, The Wild Boar park near Chipping, Blackpool, South Lakes Zoo and we did once make the mistake of going to Morecambe and found it a desolate run down shit hole but in fairness it was a bleak day and the park area the name escapes me maybe Sun or Mount something is meant to be ok but we didn't visit there.

taybert · 12/08/2019 15:11

I live around there too- if it’s a sunny day and you just want beach, ice cream and fish and chips then morecambe is fine. There’s also some good play parks on the prom depending on the age of your children. It’s not a good town for a wander around on a rainy day though. All previous places mentioned like Hawes etc but also worth remembering that from there it’s pretty easy access to the South Lakes too.

y0rkier0se · 12/08/2019 15:23

Thanks, we definitely intend to visit Gisburn Forest and Aysgarth. We’re visiting the lakes later in the year so won’t venture up there this time but will check a few of the other places out, thank you!

I’m binge watching Helicopter ER. It would seem that a popular occupation in the Yorkshire Dales is crashing your mountain bike, seriously injuring yourself, having a trip in the Air Ambulance to Leeds General/James Cook hospitals and spending time in the ICU. Not a recommendation for your holiday though, Op.

y0rkier0se · 13/08/2019 23:07

Ha, as lovely as that sounds @FadedRed, I think we’ll give it a swerve!
Had a lovely day with the dogs up at Gisburn Forest and the surrounding reservoir, got a decent walk in and they’ve snoozed all evening so thank you for the suggestion!
Weather is looking rubbish for the next few days unfortunately, hopefully it picks up towards the end of the week!

Ingleton waterfalls trail, Ingleborough hill, Malham cove and tarn area (unfortunately no dogs on the boardwalk near the tarn which I'd otherwise recommend). Wharfedale - Bolton abbey and the Strid, grassington, burnsall...

So much lovely countryside, TBH I wouldn't bother with beaches on the Lancashire coast from there and obviously you're nowhere near the Yorkshire coast.

Yubaba · 13/08/2019 23:42

We went to Malham cove today, a beautiful walk and some good pubs nearby for a pint afterwards, perfect!
