Why do pylons freak me out?

Just read a thread where OP was querying buying a house near a pylon.

Do they freak anyone else out? I just looked at a picture of once and it really scared me! Sad

They are a bit scary and dystopian looking.

I like them though (from a fair distance). Been fascinated by them since I was little.

ohflowerofscotland · 11/08/2019 23:59

@JasonColbyStankers Isn't any round where I live, thank god! Any man made large object gives me the heebies.

They bother me. I wouldn't buy a house near them, nor near an electricity substation.

I recently had a job interview at a place where there were pylons situated nearby and it put me off accepting the job!!

I don't know what it is about them that weirds. Wind turbines also Sad

Same, I read a book once where a woman was effected, think Phil Rickman. Maybe it's a hangover from the tripods which scared the fuck outta me as a kid.

Hopefullysmart · 12/08/2019 00:09

I recently heard of a proper name being given to the notion of being freaked out by large structures. Can't remember the name now, but I think it planted a seed because despite having never been bothered by them before, I felt so unnerved and physically nauseous when looking at turbines as we drove to our holiday recently. And weirdly, only the still ones. It was very strange. Pylons not so much. I hardly notice them.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/08/2019 00:09

Maybe you'd find them less weird if you understood them as pieces of engineering?

They're quite interesting if you stop and think about them.

Lurleene · 12/08/2019 00:11

I remember the public service films from the early 80s showing kids getting electrocuted due to flying their kites into a pylon. That put me off them somewhat.

Also the series Tripods didn't help. I would imagine getting lifted up by one to have my brain removed. Telly was scary stuff.

ohflowerofscotland · 12/08/2019 00:11

@Hopefullysmart I cringe when I look at them. Ugh..

OP posts:
ohflowerofscotland · 12/08/2019 00:11

@Lurleene I was born in the late 90s so I missed that!

There aren’t any near where I live either, I’m pleased to say.

I think it’s a good thing to be scared of them, so you won’t want to climb one.

I like to see them on my travels though, as an interesting part of the landscape (and because I have no life and no friends).

The weirdest this is the funny swishy/hummy noise they make

BornInAThunderstorm · 12/08/2019 00:17

There is actually a pylon appreciation society
www.pylons.org/
Not a member but I never realised how many variations there are

Lurleene · 12/08/2019 00:19

Crossed posts with Havalina re the Tripods. Not just me then.
Apparently Megalophobia is the fear of large objects. I think my DS has it to some degree, he hates going to London because of all the tall buildings and feels dizzy and faint if he looks up at the London Eye.

ohflowerofscotland · 12/08/2019 00:19

@Theworldcouldbemymollusc I've never been close to one to hear the noise

OP posts:
ohflowerofscotland · 12/08/2019 00:21

@Lurleene I went to New York and I felt the same pretty much the whole time we were there. I really freaked out standing at the bottom of One World Trade Center Shock

OP posts:
NorthernMonkies · 12/08/2019 00:25

They always make me need a poo when I stand near them - mythbusters disproved the brown noise theory but I’m not convinced 😂

JasonColbyStankers · 12/08/2019 00:34

There’s this too
