What do I want for my birthday?

I need to tell DH what he’d like to give me.

I don’t really do make up or perfumes. I do like Nice Things.

What do I not know about that I would like?

We need more info about you.

Do you have pierced ears?
What did you tell him to give you last year?
Which section of bookshop do you gravitate to?
Do you want a possession or an experience?

womanaf · 11/08/2019 22:56

Ha, I was hoping if I was non-specific I’d get more answers...

No pierced ears.
No idea what he gave me last year. It’d be something I picked up myself and gave him to wrap and give me back. (More for the kids’ benefit than anything else.)
Literary fiction. Usually whatever is on the tables in Waterstones.

I'm told that I am notoriously hard to buy for and can never think what I want when people ask. However I have recently read a thread on here called something like 'what have you splurged on that has been worth the money' which has got me wanting some seriously good quality bed sheets so will be looking out for some and the pointing DP at them.

I would take a look at that thread as there are quite a few things on there that would be a great gift that maybe you wouldn't buy for yourself.

womanaf · 11/08/2019 23:00

Oh that sounds like the thread I need, thanks. I’ve been googling ‘presents for women/wives/me’ for far too long. Will go look.

OP posts:
womanaf · 11/08/2019 23:05

Found it. Was just compelled to come back to say isn’t splurge an odd word? 😀

What PP said... i know it's for the house - not you as suchBlushbut yes yes to linen bedding... just 'invested' in some from the secret linen company - was ogling/googling/lusting after for a year as it's very pricey but Oooohmaaaagaaawd... indescribably lush/different/more luxurious than ANY other bedding i've ever tried (white company/hotel quality etc) Game changerGrin

CherrySocks · 11/08/2019 23:08

Have you really googled "presents for wives" to find out what you might want?!!?

newmummalion · 11/08/2019 23:12

If you don't know what you want why not have a family day out somewhere instead? Or maybe a spa day for you and a friend, or a massage?

No point getting more stuff just for the sake of it.

womanaf · 12/08/2019 00:19

Sort of, you’d be surprised how quickly it gets to Adult Connect 4. I didn’t specifically google presents for wives but I ended up reading lists of presents for wives/mums etc. I asked google what I want for my birthday. I’m not the first it turns out.

I don’t really like ‘stuff’ so I’d rather have one good version of something than 10 less good versions and when I find a thing I like I stick with it for years. So one scarf I love and wear everywhere, rather than 10 scarves I have to choose between, iyswim.

I might be tempted to upgrade the bed linen except I just bought a new set I adore.

We’ve already got lots of kid stuff lined up but I was just thinking that I couldn’t possibly make it to spa day because kids when I thought I could send them to holiday club on a day it’s not strictly necessary which would then be a lot like a spa day for me. (Kidding not kidding)

From the splurge list an oxo mandolin’s at the top so far...

Best birthday present I had was last year, a bird feeding station.

This year's was excellent too, a really good pair of extending loppers.

thejudgesaidhewasatitandIagree · 12/08/2019 04:44

I've had my dh book a fancy dinner out, like a degustation, and stay somewhere nice overnight. I tell him if all else fails I always like jewellery Smile
Diptyque candles never go wrong either.

Mileysmiley · 12/08/2019 04:48

I have milestone birthday this year and would love a new engagement ring. I would like a white gold ring with a 1 1/2 carat diamond. Whether I get it or not is anybodies guess.

thejudgesaidhewasatitandIagree · 12/08/2019 04:52

@Mileysmiley ha me too Grin

Nearlyadoctor · 12/08/2019 07:06

I’m fussy and don’t like ‘stuff’ - I’m very specific in my tastes and DH is not a great present chooser. I want a new pair of boots (specifically Fairfax and favour) and a wool winter coat but will get them both myself going into the autumn. Like the OP I’d rather have recent decent stuff and have less.
It’s my birthday next week and I’ve asked for a dreamland faux fur heated throw. I find if I sit and read in the winter I get cold quickly and thought this would save putting the heating on. DS bought his fiancé one last year and I love it but wouldn’t buy it myself iykwim.

PegasusReturns · 12/08/2019 07:17

I think I'm easiest person in world to buy for but DH struggles as I can pretty much but what I want, he's finally learning that one really nice thing works best:

Things I've been bought and loved:

Planner
Leather gloves
Tiffany bone bracelet
Silver cream jug
Diptyque candles
Small painting
Antique photo frame
Ceramic plant pots
Really sharp knives
Leather coin purse

BizzzzyBee · 12/08/2019 09:46

I want a sleeping bag coat. They look so toasty and apparently last forever. Very expensive though! Wondering if DH can be persuaded to buy one for a significant birthday...

BarbaraofSeville · 12/08/2019 09:58

If you have to tell him what to buy it's not a present. The present is him thinking and making an effort to choose and buy you something.

If you don't want him to choose something that you potentially won't like, then just ask for a bottle of gin or other nice alcohol, chocolates, a meal out or a day out and then he has to make the arrangements or go and choose something.

I accepted some time ago that this was a recipe for Birthday Disappointment. So now I just aim for something I’ll enjoy.

I work from home. Maybe I need a heated throw. I’m always cold.

What kind of budget are we talking about . I’ve just had a birthday and I got a large Taj Mahal Lego set , a steamboat willy Lego set , a Manta hair brush and a portable dog washing thing . Obviously no use to you if you aren’t into Lego ! Previous years I’ve had phones , iPads , more Lego etc . I’d also appreciate gift vouchers for the stables I ride at or for the dog groomer we use . I’m early 50s , don’t wear make up and can’t wear any jewellery due to severe contact dermatitis so it’s quite limiting for personal gifts.

MotherofDragonsandPigs · 12/08/2019 11:08

Penguin clothbound classics might be a nice present if you're into fiction.

Things on my list:

L'occitane nice smelly things
Champagne and crystal flutes
Mulberry handbag
Nice underwear, I'd definitely choose it myself, god knows what my partner would choose!
Rose for the garden

GetTheStartyParted · 12/08/2019 11:09

My DH gave me a digital piano for my birthday. It feels so indulgent to put on the headphones and play for an hour, whenever I want to.

I hope to teach myself a little more as I had a few lessons as a child.

Ninkaninus · 12/08/2019 11:16

Cashmere scarf (burgundy, camel, or leopard print).

Daisy earrings from Georg Jensen.

Silk pyjamas and/or kimono.

Beautiful pair of boots from Miista.

Leather jacket (burgundy, chocolate or tan).

Pearl studs or pearl ring (vintage).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 12/08/2019 11:49

Ooh was it my splurge thread? Best thread I've ever had on here!

For me:

Posh bubble bath in glass bottles eg. Neals Yard
Silver bracelets
Nice meal out
Fluffy towels
I'd like a silk bandana
Longchamp bag
And all the books

womanaf · 12/08/2019 11:55

It was, Remus. Excellent use of a weird word.
