How many nappies does a baby go through daily

This might be one of those questions with no one answer to it...
Im looking at cloth nappies for my baby due in Jan but im not sure how many id need per day ? Ive seen a good bundle deal with 10 nappies in it in each size that claims to see them to potty training but 10 nappies a day seems a small amount Confused if they were having a day where they had a tummy bug or something id have biodegradable disposables as back up in case they all end up in the wash halfway through the day but what's an average day for your baby ? I used cloth nappies from day 1. I'd say you need 5 nappy covers and about 20 cloths plus a few all in one nappies. I presume you're looking to buy the bambino mio ones? I have them. In summer it's ok to wash them in the evening for the next day but not in winter, you'll need a bit more time for drying.
I use to change the inside cloth every 2 hours (or more if there was poo) but kerp the same cover for a day/ half a day if it wasnt wet.
You can also look at second hand cloth nappies on ebay. When you get them, you need to soak them in the bath with washing powder for at least 2 hours then put them on a 60 wash and (if possible) leave them to dry in the sun.
Good luck!

At his height (of pooing) my DS soiled 10 a day.

Could you get 30 nappies that were birth to potty instead of 3 different sizes?

Tweetingmagpie · 11/08/2019 20:29

I’ve tried all the different brands of cloth nappies and have about 500 pounds worth of brand new ones in my youngest baby’s bedroom but I just think they’re all shit! They look cute though Grin

But in terms of cost I doubt they’re cheaper than disposables and you can get biodegradable ones nowadays.

I've got over 50 of loads of different types - all second hand as cotton/bamboo improves absorbency as it's used. Not spent more than £200 all in. Microfiber is no good for nights. You really need bamboo, or cotton with bamboo or hemp boosters. Check out ebay, gumtree, preloved, or facebook cloth nappy resale groups.

I regularly use 4 a day, sometimes 5 or 6. We did a trial scheme from fillyourpants.com £110 for a selection of nappies but you can return all the nappies after a month for £100 refund. Definitely appreciated trying out different styles. Most nappies took more than overnight to dry - I have about 16 nappies and wash every other day.

Newborns get through sooooo many but I’d recommend muslins and wraps at first. This picture (hopefully will upload) should help with how many you’ll need from around 6 weeks old

It depends on the child, one of mine poops three times a day. The other once a day.

With DS I went through 90 (disposible) nappies in the first week. I was tempted with reuseables, but I don't have any way to dry them.

Lucafritz · 12/08/2019 08:22

Kpo58 You can just dry them with the rest of your laundry on an airer or a washing line 90 nappies a week is a gross amount to be sat around in landfill for the next 500yrsShock

Tweeting Magpie 1 Disposable Nappy costs on average 15p per nappy i can do a 40°c wash load of 10 or 20 nappies a day for about 30p including detergents Hmm do explain your maths Wink

You can get little radiator airers if you don’t have much room. This is my nappies drying. Things on top are cheeky wipes reusable wipes which I HIGHLY recommend.
I hung them up yesterday and the wipes will be dry plus most of the nappies. Some of the hemp and bamboo boosters might not be quite dry.

I can dry them on the line outside when it’s not pishing down 😏

I started with 20 little lambs size 1 plus 5 covers. (I paid £25 second hand, absolute bargain) I would use about 10 a day between birth and 8 weeks. Baby was a big pooper.

Then I moved onto birth to potty pockets (little and bloom) I use prefolds in the pockets. I have 15 of these. (I paid £30 second hand for the pockets - £20 for 30 prefolds to use as inserts)

I also have 6 second hand bum genius which I use at night time, also birth to potty. I got these free as the leg elastic was shot, but I replaced it myself and they're as good as new.

I use about 6 a day now. Dry on the line or on the airer.

£75 all in. 30p a day to run washing machine if I wash everyday.

Second hand can be great, less cost if the brand doesn't suit. Check elastics, PUL and no stinks or stains. Nappy groups on Facebook have great advice.

Meconium and reusable nappies is not a pretty mix. Lots of mums that use reusable nappies wait 6 or so weeks before starting as the fit can be tricky with a newborn and newborn babies, particularly if they're breastfeeding, poop a lot. My ds regularly went 10-15 times a day.

I really wanted to use reusables but circumstances didn't allow for it. My ds is 7 months and still will not tolerate even slightly damp nappies. They have to be changed instantly. We still go through a shocking amount of nappies each day. He was also horrendously pukey until very recently so my washing machine was constantly on, without washing nappies as well.

I totally agree with your points about landfill etc but would advise that you let your baby arrive before you commit that amount of money to nappies. If your circumstances don't allow for you to use them you'll regret it. Particularly as it sounds like you're on a budget anyway.

Depending on the baby, having a newborn can be very difficult and you might just thank god you don't have to wash nappies, at least for a bit.

RandomMess · 12/08/2019 09:40

I just used the freebie nappies for the first few meconium ones.

Stay away from EBay to but 2nd hand unless they are local and you can go and view etc. Seriously there are wonderful nappy forums for advice and bargains.

What matters is condition of fabric, elastic not whether they look grey or a bit stained. Hanging them out in the sunshine gets rid of most stains, anything with hemp in looks a bit of strange colour IME.

Pinkout · 12/08/2019 10:40

When they’re a newborn around 10-15 a day depending on how many shits they do. I found every single nappy change was a shit for the first couple of months (breastfed).

Now he’s nine months old I’d say 8 times a day? I don’t count so it’s a guess. He only poos once or twice a week now (still mostly breastfed with the odd bit of food).

I’ve always used reusable nappies, they’re incredibly easy with a washing machine.

Pinkout · 12/08/2019 10:42

I bought second hand prefolds and wraps for the first month or two. Had about 20 prefolds and 10 wraps which was enough when an every other day wash. I used the same prefolds and wraps for three babies so incredibly economical!

Then switched to all in one nappies from around 6-8 weeks when they start to get chunkier around the thighs. I have a few different brands, Bambino Mio is my favourite and they’re sold cheaply in Aldi every few months.

Winegumaddict · 12/08/2019 10:50

I used cloth for both DC but none of them fitted for the first few weeks. You may well need some disposable ones to get you through to start with. Also if you have to stay in hospital you'll have no way to wash and dry them. I swapped over once they were about 6 weeks ish. I had about 30 or so and washed every other day. The most absorbant liners took a while to dry. Also just because its your choice of nappy doendt mean it'll fit your DC the best I had to experiment to find the ones which suited each DC without leaks.
