Buying a car - thoughts

So, I viewed a car (small car supermarket last week) - 3 years old, good quality, mpv. Not sexy, discontinued model. But a "head" buy. Also looked at a cpl of others.

Salesman called Thursday, had I thought further? I said yes back to car one but I think it's slightly overpriced and gave examples from my research. Same make, model, transmission, mileage, etc. Hoping to talk sensible prices and arrange a deal.

The salesman then asked if I had a car to part exchange which I do, already discussed at the weekend and have a valuation. He then proceededbto tell me I would pay less than the RRP because the price for my vehicle would be deducted. I tried to explain I understood that but the starting price was too high and I was interested in negotiating an overall deal.

He then raised his voice in a condescending way said it again, I repeated myself and was treated to a "now look here Miss, this is how it's done.

Cash buyer looking for a fair deal for a fair price. Would Mnet continue to do business with these people. Oh, and I'm 58 and have bought a fair few nearly new or good 2nd hand cars over the years.

Never been treated like this by a gge before but always in the past gone to a main dealer. Would you drop the owners a line in a helpful way because this chap can't be helping their reputation? Or am I just an old gimmer who expects better and won't get it. I was a bit cagey about funding because I didn't want them to think I was minted and have also read that best deals can be donebon a loan because they get their commission even if you pay it straight off.

This is why I tend to buy via carwow and other such online ways to buy. I haven’t once been to a car dealer without leaving thinking ‘well there is NO WAY I’ll be buying a car from you’. With the exception of one very nice young man at the VW place, but that is literally it. For all the reasons you list above.

Thanks for tip. Can you arrange a test drive through car wow?

I've used Car Wow as well and found it really useful. They put you directly in contact with dealers, so you should be able to book a test drive. I got 2 really good offers through Car Wow and managed to use the numbers to beat the local dealer down on price.

I've had numerous issues buying from car supermarkets, including being sold a car which was dangerous to drive. I tend to stick to manufacturer dealers now and find them easier to do deals with.
