What can I do in York?

Hi all!

My DS will be spending the last week of August (Wednesday to Wednesday) with his Dad. This is the first year we have been separated, so I'm a bit uneasy about spending so much time away from my DS, but he's excited about a week with his Dad!

Anyway, so I'm working flat out until the Sunday, and I have booked a little overnight stay in York for myself Sunday to Monday! I've wanted to go for years, and so just thought "Fuck it, I'll go in my own"

Is there anything anyone would suggest as a "must see"? I don't feel uncomfortable about eating or going places alone so just looking for some ideas please!

TIA

It is lovely in York, lots of little independent shops, the Shambles (although that has gone all Harry Potter now), the Cathedral is beautiful. Lots of lovely cafes and places to eat.

Go for some food at Partisan on Micklegate. Tiny bistro but amazing food. Intimate and arty but friendly.

Walk the whole length of the walls.

Get tickets for whatever show is on at The Theatre Royal.

Go to the Everyman Cinema on Blossom Street. Velvet Sofas and table service! They have single sofas too.

Obvs go into the Minster and if you're feeling okay with spiral stairs, go up to the tower for stunning views.

Wander down Fossgate and pootle about the cafes and little shops.

Sit in Museum Gardens and watch the world and squirrels go by.

If it rains, Castle Museum is big and varied.

The Art Gallery is wonderful too.

Soooo much.

Climb the Minster tower - amazing view from the top. Go looking for the cats on buildings - fun way to have a wander of the city centre while having a bit of a purpose. Walk the walls. My favourite museum is the Castle Museum, which is the museum of everyday life. Boat trip on the river.

The viking experience was surprisingly good. There was also a truly beautiful interactive Van Gogh exhibition on when we went a few weeks ago which was well worth seeing.

Castle museum was great.

Wow! Thanks so much for the great suggestions! I'm actually really looking forward to it now, and will definitely be fitting as much into 48 hours as I can!

I was going to suggest Delrio’s Italian but on checking it looks like it’s closed Sunday and Monday. There’s a very nice Thai nearish to Micklegate, I think it’s called The Old Siam. I’m all about the food, obviously. Very envious of you OP!

If you're a National Trust member the Treasurer' s house near the Minster is really interesting.

Really recommend a walk in the museum gardens. The Shakespeare Rose theatre is still on and fabulous.
The walls are great. Castle museum is also fab.

If you like Thai food then Khao San Road on Walmgate is delicious!

Ethelswith · 11/08/2019 21:14

Feeling v nostalgic reading this!

Is the Spread Eagle still going? (real ale pub, just outside the city walks, a place I have fond memories of)

LookImAHooman · 11/08/2019 22:37

Definitely go to the Corner Grill House on Walmgate (just down from Khao San Road). Bonkers but brilliant waitress and the food was excellent. Really tiny, though. Likely need to book.
