Motion sickness

Our DD age 1,8 suffers from a terrible terrible motion sickness. 5 min in the car and she vomits. Anything we can give her to make it less painful for her? Traveling is limited to absolute necessity but is is still awful Sad

Im not sure if your child is 1, 8 or 18.

If they are too young for stugeron or kwells etc, then liquid piriton is also anti emetic and suitable for 1 year plus.

NavyBerry · 11/08/2019 09:27

@Branleuse 1y8m she is a toddler. Thank you!

No worries. Its what worked for my daughter. She appears to have grown out of her travel sickness. Wish i could say the same for me

Check with a pharmacist before buying as phenergan an anti histamine with anti emetic properties is not safe for young children.

Branleuse · 11/08/2019 21:13

Phenergen is ok from 2 at lowest dose, but piriton is ok from 1. I don't think there is anything else suitable for such a young child.
Depending on how woo you are, sometimes we used nux vom (homeopathic) and helped a little.
You can get those wrist bands too, but i never felt any benefit from them

NavyBerry · 12/08/2019 09:06

@Branleuse thank you! We are desperate and will try everything that is allowed

Is she continually sick? My DS was always sick in the first half hour (unless he fell asleep - bliss!) but then not again for the whole journey.
He had Kwells from when he was allowed, and they certainly helped.
He’s now 7 and not sick on EVERY long journey. First year of school was bad as it’s a 20 minute drive so often sick on the way!
Ferry crossing tonight...

Branleuse · 12/08/2019 10:24

Being someone that has had motion sickness my whole life, please don't think that its ok if they stop being sick after half hour.
Sometimes if ive even allowed myself to get travel sick, even when the journeys over, i feel rubbish for hours. For the sake of a spoon of medicine, its not worth it.

parrotonmyshoulder · 12/08/2019 10:40

Oh, my child always feels better after he’s been sick once! I wasn’t suggesting it’s okay for them to feel sick the whole journey. I’m sure it’s different for different people!

NavyBerry · 12/08/2019 11:24

@parrotonmyshoulder well we try to stop whenever she is sick and haven't tried any long journeys yet. I now have a feeling it even got worse because we used to travel in her nap time and it was fine. Now she gets sick even when asleep and then wakes up to being a total mess. It is very sad to see her suffering so much but sometimes there is no other way for us to get around

@Branleuse I tend to think she feels slightly better after being sick but of course we would never dare keep traveling long hours just relying on her being sick once in the beginning of the journey. She is happy once we take her out. I used to get sick in cars when I was little but I was nowhere near as bad as this. It literally takes her 5 min... it is extreme

My DS has definitely improved as he’s got older, thankfully. He doesn’t really feel sick though, just IS sick, then it’s over. Being nauseous the whole journey must be awful.

Mummoomoocow · 12/08/2019 11:43

My son is the same, we don’t go in cars often

When I read into why motion sickness happens it lead my to a few ideas that might help, maybe you could do the same, some things you can’t help but ideas such as mirrors for baby to see out the windows and raised car seats, removing strong smells and keeping air flow might be helpful for you

NavyBerry · 13/08/2019 07:47

@Mummoomoocow we have tried all the tricks. Unfortunately she cannot see much from our car window. She is too low and is still in a rear facing seat. But even when she is in a minivan in a forward facing one it is all the same. How old is your son? I hope she will outgrow it at some point

Mine is the same age.
