...marked clearly across the back with the child's full name in large letters

Currently starting the uniform labelling. New school so the full horror of things to label. (Please presume I am already labour-saving where possible re Stikins etc.) I have reached the lab coat / art wrap whatever we are calling it. It has to be labelled with the full name in big letters across the back - so it can be easily read and yelled when a teacher spots the pupil about to set themselves alight, I presume. The guidance cheerfully suggests iron-on letters or sharpie - I don't have the former, and as it's very dark material I don't see how pen would show. So, like my poor mother before me thirty years ago I am embarking on a wonky chain stitch...

I have questions:

  1. Is this common?
  2. In case my child ever outgrows this (and believe me I sized for growth when buying), have I missed anything about how this could be done more easily?
  3. I went to a girls' school. Do boys have to have lab coats blazoned with full names too? If not, why not?
  4. Anyone interested in doing it for me...????

@AllFourOfThem I like your style. I believe Q and M have already been taken, P might be unfortunate...I is nice and simple to sew though, hmm Grin

Amazon have them

AtleastitsnotMonday · 10/08/2019 21:44

That’s iron on letters by the way

Silver sharpie is the way forward. I do stick in labels in two places and then initials in silver sharpie (dark uniform) inside somewhere obvious. It washes fine.

We had to embroider our own forename, and initial if name was duplicated, on the front of our Home Ec. apron (late 70's). Quick tutorial of how to chainstitch, a list of approved colours and this is your homework and needs to be completed by next lesson. It took hours and I don't think I have used chainstitch since. That bloody apron lasted three years even though it was miles too short because I wasn't doing anymore embroidery.

I have used nail varnish on a bag and a pencil case and it lasted well but I think only the pencil case was washed and that might have been twice at most.

Fabric puffy paint.

My DS is starting at a non-uniform school in Sept, I've ordered a white fabric pen and some Stamptastic stuff.

Femodene · 10/08/2019 21:59

(B&M have a multipack of puffy paint for fabric, all different colours)

I would take it to a printing or embroidery olace where they do work wear. I got my DD's name put on her gymnastics hoody for £4.

Flat I may have been slightly exaggerating about font! But they do specify the labels and which colour and I think it's intital. Surname.
I said font because I'm sure friend said it's a specific label the shop do for the school. They must also be sew on and not iron on!

I am curious on what goes on in your child's school! My children have been to three different high schools - two of the schools the children didn't even need a lab coat. The third they had a art/science wrap but no name needed on the outside.

endofthelinefinally · 11/08/2019 09:09

I cut letters out of felt and blanket stitched them on. Quicker than chain stitch.

FlatheadScrewdriver · 11/08/2019 09:32

Having had to do this when I was at school, I'm not that curious @ittakes2 because nothing very interesting happened to me! I suspect it's one of those "we've always done it that way" things that's never been re-visited. Now that I think about it, I had to have my initials embroidered on the front of all my gym kit too. Thankfully that's not the case for DD - small mercies.

I wish I had thought of felt! and quite a lot of these other ideas
