On holiday in Spain till 19th -found lump in breast

I am on holiday in the Spanish Pyrenees (quite a cut off area with no phone service in or near the campsite) with husband and two children and have found a lump in my left breast.

I haven’t said anything to DH yet.

I would appreciate a bit of guidance because my head is in a whirl.

As today is Saturday, my thinking is to fake work call, call my GP first thing Monday morning- they usually call back within a couple of hours -and ask them to make a referral for mammogram. The alternative -actually going home -would be alarming and distressing for the children.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated. Stopping for now so the kids don’t read this.

Thanks for reading.

Hi OP. Honestly if I were you? I would book a GP appointment for as soon as I got home, but until then I would forget about about it & enjoy the rest of my holiday.
It’s most likely to be nothing to worry about, but in any case a few days here or there is unlikely to make any difference. Flowers
Have you had anything like this before?

Rivkka · 10/08/2019 16:15

I'd book a GP appointment for when I got home then forget all about it until then.

Book for when you get home. My mum found the same in the middle of a 3 week holiday. The oncologist said a couple of weeks delay would have made no odds ( two small moderately high grade tumours. She's absolutely fine now 11 years later).

Firstly, I doubt a GP would make a referral without physically examining you.
Secondly the clinic may reject a referral if they know you are unavailable for the next 10 days.
I would book a GP appointment for the day you return. They will refer you to the fast track breast clinic and you'll be seen within 2 weeks.

sleepyhead · 10/08/2019 16:34

And should have said, high high chance it's something benign, just if it is something that needs treatment this is a very short delay.

DianaPrinceRocks · 10/08/2019 16:38

OP this happened to me except it was at the start of a 3-week work trip.

I rang my GP and she reassured me but told me to make an appointment for as soon as I was back.

I did and she referred me to a consultant pronto - I think it was about 2 weeks and I had a mammogram and consultant appointment on the same day. Anyway it turned out to be a (large) cyst which he drained there and then and I was sorted.

So just to echo everyone else, book an appointment for as soon as your home but try not to worry. It's hugely likely not to be anything serious.

StillSurviving · 10/08/2019 16:41

Well done for finding it. Get your GP appointment booked for your return. Then try to put your brave face on in front of kids. But do tell your DH.

No point worrying until you know you have something to worry about. Easier said than done, admittedly.

I'm five years since my diagnosis. So I do understand the fear of having found something. My gP sent me away the first two times anyway, as she was convinced I was too young / it was unlikely / probably monthly cycle related. So I was delayed by 6 weeks - even though it probably took me about 3 weeks before I even went in the firs place! So, yes, mentally would be easier if you were able to get an appointment immediately, but in terms of worst-cast scenario, the extra weeks are unlikely to have a huge affect.

The same thing happened to someone I know on holiday, they initially saw a local doctor who was able to assure them it was a harmless breast ‘ mouse’. Can you see a local doctor?

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 10/08/2019 16:55

As others have said book GP appointment for when you get back, it's only 9 days. You may find it's disappeared by then anyway 💐

Flowers to all. Thank you.

I really wouldn't bother get a local doctor to examine you, they won't be able to tell you anything for sure. In the UK all breast lumps should now be referred to the breast clinic within 2 weeks.

My GP really thought my breast lump was a 'breast mouse' (fibroadenoma) but she referred me anyway, and thank god she is because it turned out to be cancer!

However, the chances are overwhelmingly that your lump is nothing to worry about, so get a GP appt booked for when you get back and in the meantime try and enjoy your holiday (easier said than done I know!) You could ask to be referred straight to the breast clinic, but I doubt they will do that without a GP seeing you first.

areyoureadytobestrong · 10/08/2019 17:11

Thank you.
It’s actually uncomfortable which I hope is a good sign of it being something related to perimenopausal changes in cycle.

I have been v v nice to my family today....

I was uncomfortable with a cyst, it's more than likely to be that. Try and put it to the back of your mind and enjoy your hols.

joystir59 · 10/08/2019 17:20

I discovered a lump on a year long round the world trip. We were in India. I went to a private clinic for tests and it was a cyst, which I had aspirated.

Lisette1940 · 10/08/2019 17:21

are you ready I found a lump but the gp found another small one. First lump had disappeared by time of consultant appt and the gp lump was a fibrocystic breast lump accordingbto the consultant so benign. Consultant said most lumps at the clinic were not cancer but to always get it checked. I well remember the feeling of panic when I found the first lump. Get it checked when you get home. X

joystir59 · 10/08/2019 17:21

I'm sure they have facilities in Spain for dealing with breast lumps!

areyoureadytobestrong · 10/08/2019 17:33

Thank you, I know I do have cysts...

What do you mean 'dealing with breast lumps'? What do you think a Spanish GP is going to be able to do that can't wait until the OP gets home?

FurnitureAndBackgammon · 31/08/2019 13:26

Any update @areyoureadytobestrong?
Hope you're ok and managed to enjoy your holiday 💐
