How to burp an unburpable baby

If I hold him upright, eventually, the burp will come out, but not for ages and he writhes in pain and cries until it does. Over the shoulder patting and rubbing doesn't work, sitting him over my knee doesn't work (he attempts to throw himself in every direction so I can't actually burp him in this position as it takes two hands to stop him flailing about)

Any tips? Weird or wonderful?

Sit baby up, keeping his back as straight as possible, with the back of your hand facing away from you support baby’s chin between your thumb and index finger ( your hand naturally makes an L shape and the baby’s chin fits into the corner) then gently rub the baby’s back with the other hand, working upwards.

This was taught to me by a midwife. I hope the descriptions makes sense.

I hope it works for you!

Sitting position, secure a grip on baby with one hand and use your other hand to take their outer arm and straighten it above their head. Has genuinely never failed me and I had two colicky babies. I think it's a mix of encouraging them to straighten their abdomen and opening and relaxing the ajoining muscles

I used to lay dd1 face down across both my knees (neck supported but face sticking out one sod so she could breather obviously) and pat her back- the horizontal-ness really worked for her!

My DD was a stubborn burper and I was given a tip by the baby massage instructor to place your hand lightly on the baby's head and gently stroke in clockwise motion. This apparently stimulates burping and actually does work!

Apparently in lots of cultures they don’t burp their babies and think it’s a crazy idea. To be honest I never really burped mine.

Gently lift baby onto your shoulder; walk up and down the stairs.

Infacol.

Remember it doesn’t matter if they burp or fart - as long as the air comes out. Perhaps try lying baby down and gently lift legs into frog position (see if you can encourage baby to break wind)

My DS responded better (burps and farts) to a tummy rub than pats on the back.

Infacol works wonders. It takes all the little bubbles of wind and makes them into one big bubble which easily comes up when you pat the baby. You either put it into the baby's bottle , or if breast fed you put a little into baby's mouth before the feed. Works like magic.

Another vote for gripe water.

Well this has set me thinking as my DH can’t burp! So now I’m worrying my unborn DS won’t be able to either .
