Severe Allergy warning bracelets

After 40 years of taking penicillin I took some yesterday and ended up in hospital, it was horrific. Sort from itching so badly and massive hives I went a lovely purplish red colour, my hands, arm, feet and legs swelled and my tongue swelled.

Noire penicillin for me

My dm (who does panic bless her) is telling me I need to wear an medic alert band. Is this actually necessary? I am not really very clued up on this stuff but am I likely to be given penicillin in an emergency?

Any other sufferers wear one or is my dm being her usual over cautious self.

Ask your doctor.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 10/08/2019 12:37

I've put it under the emergency section on my phone, the bit you can access without the PIN.

KnittingSister · 10/08/2019 12:38

If the reaction was as bad as you say, I'd take the bracelet, necklace, tattoo, a sign on your forehead - and anything else you can think of! Hope you feel better soon.

The phone idea is a good one. Will do that.

I am fine now, was given steroids and an injection of something.

i have a similar reaction to another medicine and wear a necklace like this. i have engraved on the back my surname, and the words 'no name of medicine'. It might just be me being overcautious but its not an ugly looking necklace so it doesn't bother me wearing it, and it could save my life one day.

Mrsjayy · 10/08/2019 12:44

I used to have a medibracelet I am allergic to latex now medical folk dont use latex gloves so the risk is minimum these days so i stopped wearing it I have info on my phone now. It really is up to you what you want to do but having your allergies somewhere is probably a good idea, you can also get cards you can write info on.

TheInebriati · 10/08/2019 12:48

Don't laugh, I use a barrel dog tag, the sort you can put a rolled up bit of paper in. I also have a laminated card in my bag, and have the info on my phone.

OK you can laugh, it is a bit bonkers.

@Mrsjayy I'm allergic to latex too. Recently I went to the nurse to have a smear test. I mentioned I'm allergic to latex she said it's fine all the gloves are nitrile/vinyl when she went to the box all the boxes in her room were latex! I'm now very cautious

TheRLodger · 10/08/2019 12:52

You can also have a card which is for your purse. I tried to have a bracelet for my health condition once I gave up on it just couldn’t get on with it

SallyLovesCheese · 10/08/2019 12:56

As a first aider, I would look on your phone for medical details as well as checking for a medical bracelet/ necklace/ anklet. So I think either of those are fine. Personally, I wouldn't think to check if a necklace had some rolled up paper inside and spend potentially life-saving time getting it out and reading it on the off- chance it was medical related.

It's definitely worth having some kind of notification. Penicillin is a common drug, if your reaction was that severe it's best to notify medical practitioners.

sleepismysuperpower1 · 10/08/2019 12:56

you can get the cards for your purse here.

Hadalifeonce · 10/08/2019 12:58

My sister wears a bracelet.

BillThePony · 10/08/2019 13:13

Thanks all have stuck the info in my phone and will get a card. That should cover it.

I am severely allergic to penicillin too.

I do wear a medic alert bracelet (£23) but I also work in a school and children are very nosy and tend to play with the bracelet (think year 2/3.)

I wear this one below as the flat metal tag sits against my skin on the inside of my wrist so you cannot see the medical condition which I don't want to advertise but instead shows the Caduceus symbol. It is easily turned over to reveal the text underneath. And the only person who has turned it over was a teacher! WTF? I prefer it to the dangly ones.

butlerandgrace.co/collections/medical-alert-bracelets/products/ammo-medical-alert-bracelet

I can remove it really easily put it back on by myself. They do other bracelets with cord adjusters, plus necklaces etc.

It is a precaution, it is on all my medical stuff and even the children knew from a young age that I am severely allergic (swollen throat/tongue allergic) and I wear it because if I am unconscious I cannot tell them I am, and I don't always have my bag and purse with me. I was told at the time (20 years ago) to wear one.

lololove · 10/08/2019 13:25

My mum and I wear sos talismans with all our medical details in (all waterproof paper and ink and sealing too so all good)

My mum also has an engraved medical bracelet with the most important details on and an ICE phone number that we got from China for literally about £4. She's worn it solidly for a year and it still looks new

lololove · 10/08/2019 13:27

You can also get things like this x2 PENICILLIN Allergy Awareness Silicone Wristband Medical Alert Bracelet (Gifts & Goodies) UK Seller (X2 Random Colours) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07CGC7W8G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_CGRtDbBN2NSJG?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 if you don't want to spend too much just incase? 😊

Mrsjayy · 10/08/2019 13:28

That would have me verysweaty grow I am always over cautious even my hairdressers makes sure she has latex free

BillThePony · 10/08/2019 13:28

Thanks

This literally came from no where, I last took penicillin about 3 or 4 year ago and was fine no trouble at all.

I have never reacted to anything before like this and am surprised at how quickly it started.

OP posts:
VforVienetta · 10/08/2019 14:05

DH is allergic to penicillin, and has never worn any ID with it. He told me, he puts it on work forms, it's on his medical records, and that's about it.
Emergency penicillin isn't really a thing, is it? So if he was unconscious and being treated in an emergency it's not a likely scenario.

ChicCroissant · 10/08/2019 14:20

I hadn't thought of putting this on my phone somewhere!

Like the OP I get the swelling reaction so I think it would be fairly obvious to medical staff if it happened. If you end up in hospital OP you'll get a red wristband and anaesthetists will quiz you about it (mention the swelling).

BillThePony · 10/08/2019 14:24

Vienetta this is exactly what I was thinking, i can't think of scenario where I would be fine penicillin without being aware of it.

OP posts:
BillThePony · 10/08/2019 14:25

*given penicillin

My granny was severely allergic to penicillin. I never saw her without her SOS necklace.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/08/2019 14:40

My sister was diagnosed with a severe allergy to chicken & legumes 26 years ago. She had a medic alert for about five years and then she was told to put it in her phone instead; and that people weren't trained to look for the jewellery anymore. I don't know how true that is - I'm sure people would look at them if they knew of them; but I don't know how many people would!

Google data seems to show a big decline in searches for, purchases of and general awareness pages about allergy jewellery starting in 2004.

dementedma · 10/08/2019 14:41

Where abouts in your phone do you put this info?
