I’m on day 4 of suspected laryngitis. Day two of no speech

Has anyone got any tips on how to help?

My throat feels like I’ve swallowed glass. It hurts to swallow.

I have to cough sometimes and my god it’s like fire in the throat

I also sometimes feel like there’s a blockage at the back of my throat and it hurts so much to swallow

I’ve been mainlining soothers which helps at first but not for long. I’ve tried covonia and that does sod all.

Oh God I feel your pain. I had laryngitis a couple of years ago and it was bloody horrific. I was on antibiotics and codeine. I had to be given paediatric penicillin v suspension as NO WAY could I swallow the tablets!

I found it easier to swallow ice cream and sorbet than plain water. Try and take regular paracetamol (or calpol if too sore to swallow tablets). Solpedeine effervescent tablets would also be a good idea (obvs not with anything else containing paracetamol).

Get well soon Flowers

Oh and tyrozets throat sweets are amazing as they contain a local anaesthetic

Coxie2006 · 10/08/2019 11:20

I get this once a year,so feel your pain. Difflam throat spray is really good. I also take paracetamol & ibuprofen together. Oh & hot drinks helped for me. I only discovered Tyrozets last year & they are really good too as a pp said. Hope you feel better soon x

I gargle with water as hot as my mouth can take with salt and soluble aspirin in. It really helps to ease the pain

SeaToSki · 10/08/2019 12:09

Gargle with salt water or disprin. Then swallow if its the disprin. Repeat every couple of hours for salt water, but as often as you can based on max dosing for the

Have you been to the GP? It could be bacterial if its that bad

Lindormilk · 10/08/2019 12:16

Have you seen the GP? I had an infection in my voice box yrs ago. I swear, i felt like i was dying. My lips started turning blue snd i thiugh it was just a sore throats.

Then over last Christmas i had strep throat. That was worse.
Go see a GP/OOH

Soubriquet · 10/08/2019 14:13

I haven’t seen a doctor yet

I at first thought it was just a sore throat and it’s progressively got worse.

If there is no improvement by Monday, then doctor it is

See a doctor asap

I had laryngitis earlier this year, it took over a month to get over it so give yourself plenty of time to recover.

Soubriquet · 10/08/2019 15:39

A MONTH?!!!

So not what I wanted to hear Sad

Try Piriton if you have some. It really helped when I had laryngitis (along with difflam and soluble paracetamol).

Soubriquet · 10/08/2019 16:22

I’ll give piriton a go. Does it have to be branded piriton or just any generic anti histimine as that’s all I’ve got.

I feel so rough and so sorry for myself.

OP posts:
AlunWynsKnee · 10/08/2019 16:55

I think any old anti histamine would do. Hope you feel better soon.

Crunchymum · 10/08/2019 16:59

I must be lucky as on the few occasions I've had it, it was mainly loss of voice (as opposed to horrible pain!). Its been manageable?

Tonsillitis on the other hand, had me sobbing to the GP and begging for anything to take the pain away Shock

blackcat86 · 10/08/2019 17:05

I have had persistent vocal issues and actually saw SALT who gave me lots of things to help give some TLC to the vocal chords. 1. Chew gum but really chew in a daisy the cow big jaw movements way. This loosens chords that get tight when inflamed. 2. Gargle with mouth wash. This washes the chords and moistens them up. 3. Shut up! Keep up the local rest. It will help. I did 5 days after vocal surgery. DH thought he was in heaven. 4. Try vocal misting to get moisture to the vocal chords. The glass feeling is dryness so get a big bowl of boiling water and make a little tent over it with a towel. Hang your head over it and breath deep under the towel. Try up to 20mins there. You'll really see the difference.

blackcat86 · 10/08/2019 17:05

Oh and drink loads of water

Labralion · 10/08/2019 17:09

Gargling with soluble paracetamol x

Soubriquet · 10/08/2019 17:23

Thanks everyone

I will try all of these

Remember to try not to talk at all, whispering is the worst, really damaging. You either speak at normal tone or you don't speak at all! I find warm drinks alternated with ice lollies work best.and back to back painkillers, at the safest limit,

PrincessMonacoOfKent · 10/08/2019 20:25

As a regular sufferer of laryngitis/throat infections I swear by original Ricola lozenges (in the bright yellow box) for soothing the painful throat. I gave some to a colleague the other day as he was suffering, and he was amazed at how much they helped.

I usually buy them from Holland & Barrett.
