Taking a Teppanyaki grill in a suitcase abroad on a plane

Inspired by the self catering abroad thread. We've got a Teppanyaki grill - basically a hot plate. It's great when we go camping and makes cooking easy. I was looking at self catering - and am a bit obsessed by the kitchens. Lots of them seem to be electric rings and that's it. No grill or oven.

So a simple question - is it possible to put such a grill in a suitcase and put it on a plane? Is there any security issues? I shouldn't think there are - but it would make self catering so much easier and open up more possibilities for plane travel.

On a side note - I wish more websites would really focus on the cooking facilities available in a picture or 2.

I don't know about the security side of things but I would imagine it would weigh quite a bit so you have to watch your luggage allowance.
Would it be worth seeing if you can hire one from somewhere nearby when you get to your venue

Where would you be going?

It's very light. I've just seen a lot of self catering holidays but a look at the kitchen pictures reveals a small hot plate for maybe 2 pans which limits cooking options.

If I am going abroad and self catering I wouldn't want to spend my time in the kitchen cooking, I would rather go out and sample the local food, but still, if that's what you like to do.
I think it's a bit mad to take heavy electrical items on holiday. What if there isn't a suitable plug socket or electrical supply? I don't think those plug adaptors are designed or rated for heavy draw appliances like hot plates. You might just end up fusing everything.

I think this is bonkers but probably fine. Check the airline requirements (that diagram with knives and the like) to be sure.

Expressedways · 10/08/2019 11:45

Bonkers but do-able if you’re really insistent. MIL once bought us a raclette machine in her luggage as a housewarming gift. But can’t you get an Air BnB instead of you’re that into a fully stocked kitchen? Or somewhere with a barbecue?

Cant see why it would cause an issue through customs / security. Expats carry all sorts of stuff in suitcases. However, think about voltage in your destination (for example, 110V in the US probably wont work).
You will also need a really good socket adapter - the usual ones aren't good with kettles and the like (tho hairdriers are ok, and they are similar power?) And we have turned a few brown before we got a kettle with the correct plug.

It's ok - I already have one

I agree - but let's just say that due to allergies, it's much much easier to self cater and to have control over what we cook.

Voltage is of course an issue. It just something that occured to me as I was looking at self catering and many of the apartments we saw just had very basic facilities.

You wouldn't believe the time I have spent looking at Air BnB kitchen pictures!!

Anyway - this is planning next year's holiday. We'll probably just go camping again anyway...

It will be fine, but there are plenty of places available with ovens etc. I use them all over the place.

Asta19 · 10/08/2019 12:47

I bought a rice cooker home from Japan in my hand luggage and there was no issue with that. It was one made for overseas use so the voltage was ok for here. I've taken all sorts of weird and wonderful things to and from countries. The only issue I ever had was taking a gold plated dish I bought in Qatar from Germany to the UK! (Long story as to why I was doing that!) .I never did get to the bottom of why it was an issue and they let it through in the end. I'm sure you'll be fine to take the grill but yes check it will work there first.

DownUdderer · 10/08/2019 13:10

Hand luggage? Normal luggage is literally thrown about a lot. Sounds so silly to take a grill abroad! It’ll get broken
