I'm scared of my neighbour

GO AWAY DAILY MAIL AND OTHER 💩 RAGS

My neighbour (I'll refer to him as Fred, he lives in the flat above mine) went to Prison nearly a year ago after a serious fight with another neighbour (Tom, not his real name) who lives in the same street. Fred lives in the flat above mine and we've had numerous issues over the last few years. From drug dealing to loud music and anti social behaviour. I've complained to the housing association (that own both my property and Fred's) numerous times but they never do anything or follow it up.

Fred and Tom absolutely hate each other. They were always arguing, fighting and making serious threats to harm each other. A few weeks before Fred went back to jail, Tom came round to the flats and threatened to put a petrol bomb through the letterbox in the communal hallway. The layout of the flats means that I would have been in serious danger from this as well as Fred. I was absolutely terrified and was barely sleeping at night (I had 8 smoke alarms and was setting my alarm clock for every 30 mins so I could check there was no fire) for fear of Tom carrying out this threat. Then the big fight happened and Fred went to Prison. Tom stayed living in his place and all went quiet.

This week I heard via another (nice) neighbour that Fred is about to be released from prison (in the next few weeks). I'm really scared (terrified) that the arguments and the fights between them are going to start again as soon as Fred is back. I want the housing association to move Fred somewhere else but don't think they will listen to me because obviously I'm not important. They just say to ring the Police if anything kicks off but surely the Police won't want to be called out everytime the two of them start arguing? Sad I just don't know what to do. I'm really stressed over it currently Biscuit

Sorry this is long Flowers

Typically in HA there will be someone responsible for situations like this. Neighbourhood Manager type person.

Look at your HA website. Who is responsible for tenant relations/safety/antisocial behaviour? Target that person.

Email them explaining the situation. Play up your nursing job (rightly so) - you are doing vital work and being able to rest is crucial. Request meeting/visit/phone call.

They may not respond. The whole non-response thing can be soul destroying but you can completely and absolutely use it as ammunition. Keep emailing.

Any news? Could someone get back to me please. The situation is urgent etc etc. Keep calling their contact centre asking for that person and log it.

Email every couple of days in the evening so that it lands on top of their inbox every morning.

In the meantime check your MPs surgery hours. Go in and talk to the person of their team and have with you all evidence of non-response/non action. If not MP, local councillor will do as well.

If they are worth their salt, their office will email someone at the HA directly and very often it's actually someone highest up the chain. I've done it a couple of times and it was amazing how quickly someone got off their arse to deal with an issue they had no time for for a year prior.

Good luck OP.

I know you dont want to move and I sympathise, massively. My arsehole drug taking upstairs neighborhood played music so loud it was just a blurred noise, for a year, in a deliberate effort to get rid of us. We moved. It very nearly broke me. It's worth moving.

Go to your Gp and tell him how anxious this makes you feel and ask him to write to your housing association asap. Everyone has a right to live in peace and safety . I would also ask your housing association for their policy on tenants and behaviour. Be v firm with the association and write a log from as far back as you can remember as im sure they have a duty of care to other tenants. also raise your concerns to mental health services and social care and they can write to the housing body and monitor the person

Why do people do that with The Daily Mail? It just screams like your wanting their attention tbh?

mumwon · 10/08/2019 22:40

can you get other (nice) neighbours to sign joint letter of complaint/concern to ha?

FridayFryUp · 06/09/2019 00:42

Thank you to everyone who posted, advised and offered support through this thread. I just wanted to tell you that I went to Citizens Advice and they helped me write a letter to the HA explaining how scared I was of Fred. I got my (nice) manager to write another letter over the music disturbing my sleep when I'm on nightshifts. I also got some adjoining neighbours to write to the housing association with similar concerns. Well....

..It worked! Grin he's being rehoused elsewhere and the flat will be re-let soon. I'm so, so happy! I cried with relief when I found out that I'd never have to spend another night in fear of him again! Grin I just hope the next tenant is a bit quieter!

Thanks everyone Grin
