Tips for UTI's and keeping them away!

On day 2 of antibiotics for a UTI and I'm still having muted burning pain but no longer whilst going to the toilet thankfully! Feeling better physically too.

What are your best tips for keeping them gone? I had a bunch of them recurrently last year and since then I've:

-Washed before & after sex. (Also get my partner to wash beforehand too incase of any rogue bacteria!)
-No longer wear thongs as doctor said they move bacteria more than normal undies.
-Try not to hold in going to the loo (not always possible if out though!)
-No longer use tampons as doctor again said they can increase likelihood.

I know you said you wash before sex, but are you also making sure you wee afterwards?

Get hold of a copy of one of Angela Kilmartin's books on cystitis - her advice changed my life. Try Amazon for a dirt cheap second-hand copy.

D-mannose, I haven’t had one since taking this.

D-Mannose is plant based in excreted through kidneys. Your urine treats the bladder as it sits in the bladder.
Google search, the New Zealand stuff is supposed to be the best.

Cross post sorry

Always always go for a wee after sex (after you.wash) As it.will help to wash.out any.bacteria.that have made.it inside . As soon as you can manage , but preferably within 30 mins to an hour max.

As soon as you get the first feeling as if you might have a UTI ( for.me.ir was a sort of slight dragging feeling after going to the loo) make sure to drink several litres of water and cranberry juice over the next few hours ( make sure you can stay near a loo) Make.this a priority.as soon as you can. Don't.put.it off more than an hour or two.at the most.

Unfortunately, I have a long life experience of uti's.Sad Try avoiding the following foods and drink, but one at a time (you need to keep a diary). Chocolate, black pepper, spices, tomatoes, mustard, brown sauce, tomato sauce, oranges or orange juice, wine, coffee, caffeine, carbonated drinks, vinegar. Drink at least 2 litres of water a day and regular camomile teas. If you feel an infection coming on drink 1 level teaspoon of bicarbonate soda in big glass of warm water 3 times a day. Some people say to drink cranberry juice but it made mine worse! Also, don't use soap down there, only water when washing or showering / bathing. Good luck, it's a right drag, isn't it?

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 10/08/2019 02:10

You explained it well though @Weenurse and you have an apt username! 😂

bumblingbovine49 · 10/08/2019 02:12

I read the Angela Kilmartin book on preventing cystitis as well years ago and her advice really helped . The book is available second hand on Amazon www.amazon.co.uk/Cystitis-inflammation-infection-Infection-Inflammation/dp/0722529961/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?s=gateway&keywords=angela+kilmartin+cystitis&sprefix=angela+kil&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1565399253&sr=8-3

igotdemons · 10/08/2019 02:14

My top two tips are making sure you always wipe front to back when you have a wee and to wee straight after sex so you’re not giving any time for any bacteria to get inside your bladder and start multiplying.

Hidingtonothing · 10/08/2019 02:17

Another vote for D-mannose, brilliant stuff. I generally take one dose when I feel the first signs of uti coming and it stops it in its tracks.

plantwhisperer · 10/08/2019 05:18

Yes sorry! Wash and wee also afterwards Grin can you tell I'm tired?

Vaguely heard of D-mannose! I'll take a look into that, thank you everyone :)

Maybe I’m stating the obvious but get your partner to wash before sex as well.

CheeseChipsMayo · 10/08/2019 06:05

Ive used Ural sachets when DC had this abroad-they were in my1st aid kit..she just stopped complaining of the feeling&it didnt come back..

timeforakinderworld · 10/08/2019 06:09

Try and wash after bowel movements too. Easier with a bidet !

plantwhisperer · 10/08/2019 06:11

@PamelaTodd Yes he does that already. (Mentioned in OP)
