Does anyone know about vertigo, dizziness, BPPV?

My DH has had severe dizziness and vertigo since Tuesday. It seems to come in waves and is so bad in the late afternoon/evening that he has to go to bed. At its worst he can barely stay upright.

GP diagnosed sinus infection and prescribed doxycycline on Tues.

Has anyone experienced this? It’s quite scary for him and he’s debilitated by it. Can hardly get to the bathroom etc without holding on to walls.

I really want to help him but don’t know how except usual provide sustenance, meds and love. One of our children is disabled and it’s getting really hard being the only adult in the house who is functioning.

I’ve absolutely had this.
You need to google Epley Manoeuvre.

I thought I was going mad. I had no idea why I would wake up & I could barely sit up or turn over on the pillow.
My partner (not advice) performed the procedure & I was fine.
My vertigo came back about 8 months later but we knew what to do.
Originally I literally didn’t know what was happening. Complete dizziness like a bad hangover.

Good luck

I had the worst sinusitis with vertigo and face pain that was nauseating.

The medication should start kicking in now. It did make me a bit drowsy though.

Do sympathise it was not pleasant.

Yes I had labyrinthitis. Violent room spinning brought me to the floor for safety. Vomiting and diarrhoea too. It subsided after a day but had to lie still . I got nausea tablets from gp and it got better over a few days. For the next few years I had milder attacks when I had a cold. I learnt about the Epley and it does help.

I’ve had both bppv and labrynthitis. Does the vertigo come when he is lying down doing nothing or only when he moves suddenly? If it’s spontaneous then it’s more likely to be infection/labrynthitis; if it’s on moving then more likely to be bvvp. If he has a sinus infection then it could be that affecting his inner ear. I found it horrible and terrifying. Lots of fluids and rest and watch out for the infection getting worse Ie temperature etc.

Thank you. Just googled Epley. Will see if I can find a suitably qualified person locally.

How long did your vertigo last for Ahhh?

As suggested, see a doctor or nurse and ask them to do the Epley manoeuvre, or you can try and do it yourself. Plenty of magnesium and vitamin B2 supplements. Also ask the doctor about something like Prochloraprezine or Cinnarizine to manage the dizziness whilst the doxy kicks in. You can get it low strength OTC as Buccastem or Sturgeon for travel sickness.

Unfortunately I suffer with it periodically as a side effect of migraine - he has my sympathies, it really is unpleasant. Hopefully this is short term, but if it persists then seeing a physio for vestibular exercises can also help 'reset' things if needed.

Benjispruce · 09/08/2019 23:10

I did it myself from YouTube.

I’d be careful with epley it gave me uncontrollable vomiting for two days

Can the doctor prescribe something for symptoms until the antibs work? I was given stemetil.

I had labyrinthitis and the vertigo for full on for about 5 days then gradually improved

I had bpv. six weeks prone, backwards and forwards to GP the pills did nothing. Then I wondered about a tooth abscess so OH took me to the dentist, he had a look said he did not think so but gave me antibiotics just in case. Three days later I was walking again. GP said oh what antibiotics, wrong ones for vertigo CF.

I went to consultant had an mri on my brain. Consultant said it was vestibular neuritis which had been caused following a cold I had suffered. I should have been given antibiotics by the GP immediately.

Because I had it for so many weeks, went to physio. who helped me retrain my brain and gave me exercises to do which I repeat whenever I have a bit of dizziness. I could not go down an escalater for a couple of years, even now I close my eyes going down.

Oh physio did the epley manoevre, did not work on me because it was not the right treatment.
