How do vocal socialists justify private school?

EachandEveryone · 09/08/2019 13:39

I often think it about gobby musicians and lately I’ve noticed friends who vehemently believe in equal opportunities for all sending their little ones to private school even though there are outstanding primary schools nearby. For the sporting opportunities was the reason. I have never

Hypocrisy.

Kpo58 · 09/08/2019 13:46

Because you don't get the opportunities in the non private schools. You rarely get the extra curricular options such as music, more interesting sports or anything that isn't sport/music related at mainstream. Not everyone has the time to ferry several children to different activities after school, so it's useful to have them on one site.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 09/08/2019 13:51

Because like rich and famous climate change ‘activists’ who travel the world on private jets or in first class, their principles apply to you but not them.

All people are equal, but some people are more equal than others

NoBaggyPants · 09/08/2019 14:01

You can believe in equality of opportunity, at the same time as wanting the best for your child in the current system. Socialism isn't a race to the bottom!

Also most of the people you talk about will be democratic socialists, not communists. In the context of private schools that would mean those from lower income backgrounds being offered bursaries. It means people having the opportunity to make the most of themselves, not everybody having exactly the same.

BertrandRussell · 09/08/2019 14:03

They can’t.

I might be prepared to make an exception for children with severe additional needs.

IAskTooManyQuestions · 09/08/2019 14:03

This is why I shall never vote socialist - it's all do as I say, not as I do.

Your Diane Abobtts of this world who happily send their child private whilst trying to deny my child opportunities, you never get this from The Blue Party, who are quite happy when peopel have aspirations

BertrandRussell · 09/08/2019 14:05

“This is why I shall never vote socialist - it's all do as I say, not as I do.“

Don’t worry-you won’t be given the option.

Moondust001 · 09/08/2019 14:12

Since when did gobby musicians and friends who believe in equal opportunities become the same thing as socialists? I know a lot of "socialists" and unlike most of the people posting here I actually know what a socialist is too. Personally I can't play a note. I don't "believe" in equal opportunities - nor in fairies at the bottom of the garden. I also don't believe in private education and did not send my children to private school. FWIIW, I happen to think that if the rich and famous and opinionated had to send their children to the local school instead of being able to buy their privilege, there'd be a big improvement in the state school system.

motorcyclenumptiness · 09/08/2019 14:18

you never get this from The Blue Party, who are quite happy when peopel have aspirations
... as long as they also have a trust fund. The sole raison d'être of the tories is to keep the wealth of the country in the hands of a tiny minority. They don't give a shiny shit about the aspirations of the masses.

noblegiraffe · 09/08/2019 14:21

Because wanting to do the best for your kids is a stronger impulse than more general principles.

BertrandRussell · 09/08/2019 14:26

“The Blue Party, who are quite happy when peopel have aspirations”

They aren’t, you know. The last thing the Conservative Party want is a well educated, informed working class....

TildaKauskumholm · 09/08/2019 14:30

Because they are hypocritical twats? How people can vote for these types is beyond me.

FamilyOfAliens · 09/08/2019 14:32

lately I’ve noticed friends who vehemently believe in equal opportunities for all sending their little ones to private school

Really? How many of these friends do you have and how come you’ve only just noticed where they’re choosing to send their children to school?

CendrillonSings · 09/08/2019 14:33

Don’t worry-you won’t be given the option.

What, Labour’s decided to disband? Great news!

EachandEveryone · 09/08/2019 14:33

Because September is coming up and I asked which nursery they were going to Smile

OP posts:
FamilyOfAliens · 09/08/2019 14:35

And how many of these hypocritical friends do you have in your friendship group? Sounds like loads!

FamilyOfAliens · 09/08/2019 14:36

Choosing a private nursery isn’t the same as choosing a private school because often private offers longer hours than nurseries attached to schools.

EachandEveryone · 09/08/2019 14:42

My goodness I’m hardly going to get into heated discussions with my friends over their school choices. I can think of at least four of my friends/acquaintances that have paid for education that are very against elitism

OP posts:
Fragalino · 09/08/2019 14:51

I've never had any impression at all that these people are caring. They seem to be the most strident, severe nasty feckers.

Blinkered and stupid.

mindutopia · 09/08/2019 16:36

What other options are there for nursery? It's not like there are free ones out there. Everyone has to pay (whether it's via funded hours or you are paying for more).

That said, I think there is a big difference between being a socialist and being progressive. Socialism is about a different approach to the ownership of the means of production and how capital is generated in a society. It doesn't mean everyone has the same and is equal. Your friends are probably not actually 'socialists' but they are probably progressive. But being progressive doesn't mean you can't spend money to have nice things. All my dc went to a private nursery. There are no other options (unless I wanted to sit at home and not work - but even liberals need to eat!). I don't really see how using a private nursery says much of anything about their political values?

tinierclanger · 09/08/2019 16:39

We don’t justify it. Except in very specific circumstances. I certainly don’t know anyone who does. HTH. 😀

BertrandRussell · 09/08/2019 16:47

“Because September is coming up and I asked which nursery they were going to ”

So you’re talking about childcare, not education?

lozengeoflove · 09/08/2019 16:51

OP, they are clearly not against elitism.

BertrandRussell · 09/08/2019 16:54

“OP, they are clearly not against elitism”

Because they chose a private nursery? What were they supposed to do- send their children down the mines? Oh, wait- the Tories closes them......Grin
