Small room decor for a boy and girl?

I live in a two bedroom flat. Not looking to move as we are still paying off our mortgage and I do love the flat.

The kids room is quite small. I have a toddler who is a boy and expecting a girl soon. I am trying to save up to renovate in the future so the room could feel personal to both of them, while they still share. They’re too young to notice anyway but I want to make it special for both.

Currently the baby will be with me for the next 2 years as I’m a cosleeper and so I’ll start to renovate for when boy is 4 and girl is 2.

Does anyone have nice room arrangement ideas to keep the small room looking spacious while still maintaining some separate spaces for parts for each.

And if I’m not pushing it, would like them to have a shared space to play in the room too 😂.

I could potentially use an external storage cabinet for their clothes to save up on havin to have a wardrobe in there. We also will have a play area outside in the living room.

Just looking for ideas that save space and are cute.

In the photo, the blue part are windows that go from ceiling to floor and ideally I would like to not block these.

In red is the current furniture arrangement with one child, it’s being used as a guest room.

For those ages, I wouldn't worry about them having privacy. I would say it is more important to maximise playing space!

I know bunk beds aren't recommended until 6, but I have to admit we used them from 4. My dc love them and they made their room seem much bigger.

We have 8 cube kallax along one wall for toy storage, the dc set up small world toys on top.

The big shallow plastic boxes that go under beds are great for lego/duplo.

Now I'm thinking, what we did individualism was the dc's bed spaces. We have their names on the wall by their beds, also posters they have chosen.

Another handy thing is a place to hang artistic creations - we have a string hanging between command hooks and a set of little pegs to hang this up.

Regarding the decor, we have a woodland theme, which is pretty neutral. Plain walls, with a big tree decal on one wall, and a rug that looks Luke the forest floor (from ikea).

I’d put the children in the larger room TBH when they need to share.

If you’re on FB, join the DIY on a budget group. There’s always lots of posts, photos and suggestions for things like this. Someone posted photos today of their kids’ bedroom - 4 of them in 1 room and it looked fabulous the way she had it laid out.
